Hi,
I'm just asking about some questions about the Spyderco enterprise.
How many persons work for spyderco? How big is the factory? how many knives are produced each year and sold in USA and the whole world? Is the factory only located in Golden, Colorado, or there are others out there? How do you work for the collaborations? Are you looking for some interesting designers, or designers come to you?
I think Sal, you're the greatest man to answer me. :)
Than you to aswer me and for all the work you do, for all the cutlery fans like me and all the people who need a good knife.

Well, some of what you ask for is priviledged information of a small private company in competition with other manufactuers. Total knife production, sales, and staffing, are likely private information.

Of what I know to be public, the Golden factory is the only Spyderco owned knife manufacturing facility. Spyderco subcontracts most of its manufacturing, especially in Japan.

Collaborations come from both angles. Sal looking for skilled knifemakers, and knifemakers and other people with designs approaching Spyderco.

Spyderco is into innovation as opposed to stagnation. They are one of the most forward thinking companies around and we owe the modern pocketknife designs of the last 20+ years to them. Before Spyderco it was a stagnant world. After, well it just keeps on changing!

No thoughts of Spyderco going public. We're definitely a family owned and operated company.

Hi Moonlight:

As of now we have about 40 employees. Our factory and corporate headquarters occupy a large 2 story brick building on the outskirts of Golden. Carlos is correct, we utilize manufacturers elsewhere with about 25% of our total manufacturing taking place in Golden.

Knives produced each year, I cannot speculate on..... sorry

In regard to knife designs, many are created here by Sal, his son Eric and R&D department. Out of house designs and collaborations happen through Sal meeting and chatting with custom makers and occasionally (but rarely) unsolicited submissions.

Hope this answers some of your questions.

Unsolicited submissions... I guess that was me

Dialex,

No you are part of the "meeting, chatting" crowd. By unsolicited I mean a designer that has had no communication, contact or friendship with Spyderco prior to sharing a design idea.
