Football great Reggie White died this morning of an apparent heart attack. He was 43 years old. He was not only a great football player, he was a great man. R.I.P. "minister of defense", you will be sorely missed..... :(

I heard a report that he died of a cardiac arrest brought on by Obstructive Sleep Apnea, a condition from which I suffer. I can easily understand how this could have happened, as I used to awaken with my pajamas and sheets soaked in sweat and feeling as if I had just gone through an extensive workout. If you snore and if you wake up tired and sleepy, I cannot urge you strongly enough to get checked out for this condition. My use of a Nasal CPAP machine has made all of the difference in the world.

I have a CPAP machine and It changed my life. Most large men like football players are now having sleep studies done.

Heed FullerH's advice have a sleep study done. Sleep apnea is when your airway is obstructed during sleep. This results in heavy snoring and periodic periods when you stop breathing. As a result your body in never able to enter the deep REM stage of sleep. Slowly and unperceptably your body becomes more and more exhausted...here are some symptoms of sleep apnea

1. snoring when you sleep
2. your tired all the time or at certian points of the day
3. reduced energy level from a few years ago.
4. weight gain
5. high blood pressure.
6. headache when waking in the morning..or a hung over feeling
7. stiff neck or sore throat in morning

If any or all of these fit you..Id bet a paycheck your dealing with what reggie white died of..check it out with your doctor.

I've got chronic obtructive sleep apnea, also.
I've been using a CPAP machine for about 5 years now. It's surprising the thing hasn't worn out yet. No more snoring or cessation of breathing.
It's definitely worth looking into if you have the symtoms. Insurance covered most of the costs of my equipment.

Sad to see Reggie die at such a young age.

Amen on getting the apnea checked. My CPAP makes me a much happier (less tired) perdson to be around.

Sad to hear about Reggie. He was a joy to watch play. The Angels' defense just stepped up a notch.

I was turoting for the UT Athletic Dept. the last year he was there and he was one of the nicest guys you'd ever want to meet.

On the subject of the dangers of sleep apnea:
1) A friend who is sleep apneac fell asleep at the wheel, one of the greatest dangers and was lucky that he only took out about 50 yards of Armco barrier on an Interstate.
2) THe same friend had his apnea cost him a marriage when he fell asleep while making love to his wife and she could never understand it. I suspect that it may have been the proverbial "straw that broke the camel's back."
3) A dump truck driver with sleep apnea fell asleep at the wheel of his truck and took out a Plymouth Voyager and a whole family of 5 or 6 people.
4) I fell asleep once in the middle of a Redskins game at Kennedy Stadium during Joe Gibbs' first tenure. If you had ever watched one of theose games back then, the noise would literally get the stadium shaking.

The moral of all of this is that you cannot trust yourself not to fall asleep at the wrong time, so you can never try driving alone for any length of time until you are under treatment. It was only after I had been on my CPAP for about three years that I felt safe enough to drive any distance. I now drive 8-10 hours stretches all alone and am happy doing it.
