R2 Almite... Anyone have one?

Is this knife designed more for utility or protection? I ask because I can't tell from any of the pictures what the tip looks like, if it is designed more for thrusting or not. Also, how grippy is the Almite handle?

Hi Dave, It's definitely designed for utility. Tip is similar to what the new Delica 4 and Endura 4 will have. Slightly less pointy than the original versions, slightly more so than the Salt I and Pacific Salt. Aside from splinter removal, still pointy enough for just about anything. The trusswork handle makes the R2 grippier than any other all metal handled Spyderco and grippier thank shiny finish CF, but not as grippy as kraton inserts, G-10, or FRN. Downside of the trusswork is that in so cases it can make cleanup a chore. Have been EDCing one for two weeks now, still not sure if it will displace the Stretch as "King of the Hill" in my EDC battery or not.

I carried mine to work the other night and it is a true workhorse.

I have to say this one is in my top 3 or 4 favorites. The truswork does make it VERY grippy and the groves on the hump and choil make it glue to your hand. Yet it still seems very comfy. Great knife overall. I just wish they had a delica or calypso Jr sized version with a UKPK type clip! Now that would be the cats meow.

Unless the skeletonized handle sacrifices too much strength, there's nothing about the R2 that wouldn't make it oustanding as a defensive piece. It may have been designed specifically for utility, but the combination of attributes (killer edge geometry, extreme secure grippy handle, solid lock) pretty much make it fine as a defensive piece, IMO. Only strength concerns would disqualify it, and I'd guess it's fine there.

I originally asked as well because I've always hoped for an intermediate size between the Delica and the Endura. I carry the Delica, a great knife, but the grip isnt' the best. For my hands the Endura is a tad too big.. I figured one day Spyderco would come out with the "Suprema" or something, around 3.4" with similar attributes as the other two. This knife, save for the obvious handle difference, seems to be that knife.
