I tried to upgrade my ram and it just made the computer go "Beeeeep.......beeeeep..........beeeeep" and nothing would load. Take out the new ram and put in old ram and everything is cool.

Specs: XP
Currently:
Memory Installed 1.5 GB (3 x 512)
Maximum allowed 4 GB* (4 x 1 GB) requires the replacement of the installed 512 MB DIMMs

*Actual available memory may be less
Speed supported PC2-4200 MB/sec
Type 240 pin, DDR2 SDRAM
DIMM slots Four
Open DIMM slots One

So, I bought 2x 2gb module dimm kit pc2-4200 533MHz

It isn't working, tried taking out all old ram, just adding one of the new cards, basically any combo.

Any ideas?

:oEdit...I think I see never mind max is 1gb per slot. :o

:rolleyes::p

Such a doof, carefully wrote down all the specs except where it said "max 1gb per slot" there I just wrote max 4gb.

there's a NIFTY program out there memtest86. sounds like you have BAD RAM! :(

Thanks, but that wasn't it. Just failed to read the specs (old computer) which clearly state each slot could only handle 1 gig. So I went and returned my 2x2gb pack of ram (BTW never purchase returned RAM from Fry's, the idiots who take the returns but their claws all over the sticks without regard to potential static or care to not touch the golden slots), and purchased 4x1gb ram (which costs more :() but works perfectly fine.

I thought I had killed my computer at first. :o

Gah.... ESD is no joke, they don't know what those special little bags are for?!

glad to hear you're up and running :D
