This is a prototype of an idea we had. This one was built by our friends at ArmsTech. We plan on doing these in production numbers. We will probably change some dimensions on it and downsize the mag rod a bit and also shorten it just a bit to make it more compact. The capsule will stay about the same though. Right now it is 3/4" outside diameter. Plenty big inside for tinder, a couple of small fish hooks, swivels and a lead sinker or two. No pricing on this yet nor do we have a production schedule worked out.

very cool, I'll take a few. When there made for sale, let me know. I'm in!

thanks,

Really nice combination of capabilities. Another perfect example of why I envision myself heading off into the wilderness with a keyring with a couple of hundred indispensible items on it! :D

very nice!

why not make a version with only a ferro rod?
(seeing that you already have the capsule for tinder storage, thus no longer needing magnesium)

That looks like a great design. Makes the most out of the stuff you're carrying. I like it alot.

I like it. Magnesium, ferro rod, and tinder tabs, all on my keyring. Cool, Jeff.

Great product, I would do a bigger rod, which has allready ben mentioned by a few at the W&SS forum.

As stated above, we have not worked out pricing yet.

My thoughts...
I agree with Qrt, a version with only a ferro rod.
Make the screw-cap on the other end - the one with the ferro rod. That way, with the smaller diameter rod, it is less likely to unscrew. Also, it would be easier to offer new rods/caps to replace worn ferro rods. Put a rubber O-ring by the threads, to keep it water-tight and reduce the chance of unscrewing.

Great idea guys

I would agree. Even though Magnesium is a great fire starter, it does however have a electrochemical recation (Galvanic Corrosion) with salt water. The rate of this reaction in this application would have to be tested. I would prefer to have a big ferro rod with greater striking life.

The concept of having the ferro & Mag encapsulated wouldn't be a bad idea either, similar to the Aurora Fire Starter concept

Thats my $0.02 worth.

The Aurora is not a bad idea, IMO but it's backwards. Nothing wrong with a ferro rod hanging out in the air since weather does not decrease its effectiveness, but the space they used by putting it inside would be better served for kit space, IMO.

You are right the Aurora is an inefficient design and not needed for a ferro rod alone. I was sugessting if you went with you origional concept of including magnesium it would need to be sealed from corrosion and the Aurora concept as an idea to solve the issue.

Dan
