Was reading the Misch Metal Ferro Rods thread and it got me thinking about making no match fires and other fire starters. So I have a couple questions:

What do you use to throw sparks with the Misch rods and how do you hold the rods? Does a knife work or is a hack saw blade better? Pictures would be nice.

The BCB Ranger Fire Flint Fire Starter, is that everything? I see a Hack saw blade and a small rod. Do you use the hack saw blade on the rod to get sparks or is this setup for striking flint? Is the rod the Flint?

Also If someone was to order these two items, what would shipping be? 84604 is my zip code. Thanks,

Heber

Personally, we use the edge of our knife on any ferro or misch metal rods, but then again all of our fire starters are designed to be last-ditch survival tools. In other words, why would you use a last-ditch tool when something else, such as a Bic lighter is available. I say practice a bit with ferro rods then put them away until you really need them. We sell the BCB fire flint and it comes with a hacksaw blade as a striker from the factory. The misch metal rods are short (about 2" long) and I can easily start a fire with one by holding it in my hand and striking it with my knife. Before you get involved in this you should read our fire kit instruction page: http://www.ratcutlery.com/RAT_Fire_Kit_Instructions_lowres.pdf

Thanks for the responce and for the link, there is some good information. :) Been using a Magnesium steel stricker for years. One of the first Merit Badges I got in scouts was the Wilderness Survival badge. Did really well making no match fires. Most fires we had on scout trips were made by me and were no match. Fun times!!

Am always looking to improve my skills in fire starting. Got matches in my fire kit, but sometimes it's just cool to make a fire with out matches or a bic.
