I am looking to purchase a Swamp Rat knife. However I am at a quandery. Should I get the Howling Rat, which due to not being overly large, would allow me more chances to carry it. Or the Camp tramp which would be useful during my camping trips but too large for day to day carry.

Decisions like these need good advice. . . :D

Greymoor, The easy answer is get the both, you will eventually anyway!

I like bigger knives and in terms of carry, where there is a will... I have a 4.5 and 6 inch fixed bladed knife within reach all day long... and though I agree that it may not be comfortable to carry bigger knives, in some situations you might be glad it is there.

Just ask yourself what you have and what you really want one for... the answer will make itself clear.

I have the Bandicoot and the CT, the coot is the 4.5 incher within reach.

Cheers

GreyMoor,
Tough question. Generally my Howling Rat gets more utility use, however my BR has seen more use overall. In other words I've used my HR for more day to day tasks, but when I really need a chopper I grab the BR.

How does this apply to you....well it really doesn't ;) except to say that you might want to decide what your primary tasks will be and settle on the knife that will fulfill those tasks. If I had to pick one I would probably choose my HR because it handles most of my daily cutting tasks.

I hope this helps :D:D

I would have to say the HR....since we all do not go camping any more than we tackle day to day stuff. But, in saying that, I have used my CT around the home of a night after work. So, yeah, get both but if you can only get one, get the HR to start. Then work your way up!:D

OK Guys here's the delema, In Michigan 7 1/2 inches of blade carried any where other than hunting or camping may be conscued as a dangerous weapon by the authorities. This in turn would cost me my concealed weapons permit (which here does not include knives). So other than camping/hunting I would only be able to use a CT or BR at home. The HR is borderline trouble but may not make the sheeple scatter as much as a larger blade.

Sad to say but southeasten Michigan has more liberals than an ant hill has ants. This in turn leads to laws that have been developed for "our own good".

Are there any Rat fans from Michigan who can give me some insight?

Just another thought. If you are truly concerned about Blade length, you may want to consider the Pauls Ratchet(hatchet). It can easily cut like a knife, but is very sheeple friendly.

Otherwise I'd go for the HR.
