Rawhide/leather "hybrid"

The guy who got my first rawhide sheath sent this knife for a sheath and I thought to try the hybrid style.

I am still in 2 minds about the result but I like how the rawhide and the stag complement each other with the smooth leather in between.

I discovered that usually this type of sheath is more suited to a large blade so I adapted it with the top part being a pouch style with the welt lock.
That always created design problems as the wrap around the handle is smaller looking and can interrupt the flow. To counter that I flared the opening... hmmm...

Ultimately he will have to decide if it's successful but it was something new for me at the very least.:p

Craftsmanship aside (because that is top notch).

I am not sure I like the result either. It looks better with the knife in the sheath - but I think the overall design of the knife is of the wrong make to compliment the sheath.

It is tough.

Again - that is craftsmanship aside - and my eye is PURELY subjective.

Good job for stretching your legs on it though. GOTTA try new stuff!

Damn you...:p

I was coming around to liking it and now you've made me think against the design.
:) :(

Well, like you said, it was "new stuff" and I think I will save this style for a big rustic bowie or something.

That's what I like about people posting their photos in this forum, it gives us lots of inspiration to both use and avoid. Ha Ha :p

Well here is another resounding vote for liking it! It's different, I like different. It's easy to do the same ole same ole!

I like the design very much. I know the craftmanship is top notch but the disign is also. It is different but goes very well with the knife and that style. The only thing I would like to see different would be color of the smooth leather being a little closer to matching the other. On the pics it looks like the smooth is more red compared to the other being more brown.

Thanks guys.. it's definitely a design that grows on me but I can also see how it may not suit someone's taste.
I emailed the photos to the recipient and he was a little hesitant at first but wrote me a second time saying it has grown on him and he's excited to see it.

As far as colour, these pictures are brightened to show the sheath better and it's actually a little more understated in person. I think any redness must be from the camera/processing. The leather is W&C chestnut with some Tan dye added to darken it and mottle it. Then Neatsfoot oil in and out and finally finished off with a light coat of TanKote.
