Today was an excellent knife day since the mail lady brought me two new knives. Both had been ordered months ago and it just so happened that both were delivered on the same day. I received the little BFC Canal Street ring knife and this one from Mastersmith Ray Kirk.

A Scagel style folder in California buckeye burl. Just a tad over 4 inches, forged 52100, titanium liners, half stops. Very cool. I have to say that Ray Kirk is a real gentleman too.

Nice stuff, Rob. That buckeye burl really looks good, especially with that design.

Congrats!

I have one of Ray's inbound any day now. woohoo!:)

That's really, really nice!!
I just love the multi-layered shine and the colour depth of that wood.

Thank you very much indeed for sharing it with us!!

Rob,
That is with out a doubt some of the sweetest looking burl I have ever seen! I would have to agree with you that it was a grand old knife day indeed for you!

Very nice scagel, the burl is impressive. You have some great taste!!!

Thanks,

Sunburst

Ray is one of the good guys, and a fine maker.

I have one of his blades, and it is a dandy.

It might be the sharpest blade I ever bought.

Thanks for the comments, gentlemen. The buckeye burl on my Kirk "Medicine Blade" is what prompted me to ask Ray to make the folder in the same stuff.

Two beauties - Very nice! Mr. Kirk is a top notch maker - he made one of my favorites.

Rob,

What're the dimensions of the knife? It's really calling my name, but I'm curious about the blade length and how it feels in your hand.

Thanks a lot,

James

Ray is one of my favorite makers. So much so that I have his M.S. test dagger.
I have been wanting one his Scagel styles for a while. Guess I need to give him a holler.

One of his Medicine knives is also on my short list.

James,

The knife is about 4 1/4" closed, blade from tip to handle is about 2 7/8. Feels good in the hand. I'm pretty sure the wood is stabilized. I'm not sure I understand exactly what it means but Ray said something about the titanium liners somehow allow less stress on the wood scales. Feels light compared to some but the walk and talk is solid and crisp. Very sharp. Great price too in my opinion. You and Bastid better go for it.:D

Stabilized wood often means it's been impregnated with some sort of artificial resin.
It means that the wood is "dead", as in it will not dry out more or crack or move so easily since the resin keeps it all in one place.
Not a bad idea: You get a natural material with all it's nice ageing sides, and at the same time enjoy the positive sides of a man-made material.

I haven't heard any-one calling knives with titanium liners and wood scales as having "stabilized wood", but I might be wrong. Maybe someone else at the forum can help out?

I love that Medicine Blade.

I have a real weakness for smallish fixed blades that are keen and sleek.

They are great looking knives. I'll have to post some pics of mine I received about 2 1/2 weeks ago in snakewood, he makes a superb folder. Well worth the 14 month wait.
When Ray refers to the titanium liners being more scale friendly. I'm thinking he is meaning that the ti liners have a little bit more flexibility &lreduces potential cracks of expaning or contracting scales compared to satinless, I could be wrong.
Thanks for sharing.

All the wood that I have used on the knives, except for the snakewood, has been stabilized by Ken McFall of K & G of Laakeside, AZ. The liners are .060" thick and that provides stability to the knife when not using bolsters. The titanium is also very light and adds a bit of width to the folder without adding weight.
I am glad that you all like the knives and hope to have some more of the MB made in a few weeks. I do have four of the Scagel style folders that I have brought to the Little Rock show.
Hope to see some of you here and if you get to make it, Please come by and say "Hello"
