I can't seem to get any sparks off my firesteel with my RC-3.

What am I doing wrong? Is it possible to get sparks with an RC-3?

Yep, what Cpl Punishment said... I've been thinking about scraping a small notch out of the coating just for this. I'm nervous that it will continue to chip after that though.

I really would've been happy if they made the knife without the coating.
Keep the blade clean and oiled, what could be harder than that?

So how would I remove the coating from the knife?

Is it worth doing? A firesteel does come with a scraper after all....

The RC-3 is very nice knife, what I wish the Fallkniven F1 was, 60 quid down the drain on that one! (however, it does throw sparks like a flame thrower).

A new firesteel is coated -- it's that coating I was referring to.
Even the scraper it comes with won't strike a spark before it cuts through the coating. Personally, I just use the striker it comes with.

I use a small (5cm) of hacksaw blade. I find the Bacho/Sandvik blades work best.

C'mon now, the F1 IS a very nice knife and in my opinion certainly not 60 quid down the drain. However, I like the RC-3 far better.:D
Why not put the F1 up for sale? I'm sure there are a lot of folks who would like one for a nice price. (no, not me, I already have one, bought it before my RC-3)

The F1 went to a good home, I gave it to my brother inlaw.:)

I'll use the scraper that comes with the firesteel, I just wanted to know that it wasn't just me who couldn't get sparks off the knife.

Thanks guys, YB.

I still have to get an RC-3 or an RC-4 myself but I have been using a RC-4 from a friend of mine. It is a great knife. That said, if I didn't order another one for me is because I already own an F1. I think both knives are great and they have a role on their own. While the RC line being easier to sharpen in the field, the F1 seems to be more rust resistant and have better edge holding. I just wish I the F1 came with a great sheath system like the RC-3 and RC-4.

I must be the only crazy person in the world who actually uses the striker that came with the firesteel. lol I don't use the serrated part. I use the flat edge where you're supposed to hold it. It's slightly curved and just sharp enough to throw HUGE showers of sparks.

I do it that way too! I tried making myself a 3 inch hacksaw blade, and got terrible sparks with it. I never have tried a file though...

i use the back of a opinel 8 carbon, never use and edge, it burrs\gets ruined
my RC 3\4 are used to CUT, i also carry at least 2 knives so the OPI is always in my survival kit with one of the RATs

Yes, I too have an Opinel no8 and the back of the blade is good for sparks. I also have a SAK Rucksack and the back edge of the saw also throws a good spark(I think the SAK Rucksack, the RC-3, my fish filleting knife and GB small forest axe are superb tools).

I agree the RC-3 is a very good slicing knife, I really like the depth and belly of the blade, the fact it's got a relatively thin, yet strong and flexible spine and an excellent (pointy:D) point.
