Hello all,

I was curious about sharpening my RC-3 on the Sharpmaker and with a Lansky. I read a post below that said the RC-3 is 15o, but you'd have to rebevel it at some point and that a Lansky system should work. So do you use the 17o slot on the Lansky to do this? I'm really confused. LOL Also, does any one have any tips for sharpening the serrations?

Thanks,

Dave

All of our knives are 20 degrees. But remember, they finish edge is done by hand so it could vary slightly from that.

I'd like to see knife manufacturers stamp the factory edge angle right on the blade so us morons don't have to fool with magic markers to figure it out. :)

My new orange RC3 seems to be closer to the 15, didn't seem like the 20 was touchin it but that's fine I like the 15 better on a knife I beat.

All of mine came really damned close to 20 degrees.

I took one of my RC3s down to 15 (or a little less), and I kind of wish I hadnt. The factory angle holds an edge longer (obviously, but it is by a pretty large margin).

I can get it super sharp though, and it really really easy to run it over the sharpmaker a bit and touch it up now and again.

That would be hard to do if they are finished by hand.

What ever the angle is, they sure cut nice. I have to admit I'm in that evil convex croud. I convexed my RC 4 when the edge needed sharpening. I then used it for 15 days, hard, on a pack trip and didn't touch it up until we got back. It still had plenty of edge. RC knives hold an edge real well. My RC 3 hasn't been convexed yet because the edge is still so nice. :D

We thought about putting the edge angle on the instruction sheet, but as sure as we do we will have a scientist put it on an optical comparator and find out that his particular knife is 18.63954 degrees instead of a perfect 20 degrees and that would just cause problems :D

Doing the edge by hand there is no way to hold them perfect.

Just disclaim the 20 degree angle with a +/- 2 degrees and tell the scientist to STFU. :p
