hello everyone.....i need some help from someone...i have two custom knives hat i need a new handle on...i'm not worried about value because they are users....i was thinking about getting some stag or ivory to use.....i am having someone re-handle tem for me .....does anyone know a reputable place online to buy stag or ivory scales from...how much is too much for nice stag or ivory,.....i don't know alot about either material so i would appreciate any info or tips you could give me.....thanks for any help....ryan

First of what type of handle construction are you replacing (frame; mortised etc)? This will determine type of material (slab/scales, carver etc.) you will require.

IMO, it will be risky ordering material on-line that's consistence with the need of the particular knives to be re-handled.

I would strongly suggest you visit a show (preferably that your maker will attend) and both chose acceptable material both from an artistic and construction standpoint.

kevin...thanks for the reply....it is a full tang knife with three pins....i don't want to go into the whole situation but i can't deal with the original maker of the knives....i am going to have someone else do the job for me....ryan

Might want to send the knives to the re-handling maker for inspection, then have him send you photos of suggested material form his inventory on hand.

If you can't conveniently get to a show yourself, consider asking a fellow forumite to shop for you. I sure wish I had asked Peter to shop for stag for me at the NY show - I would be happy with the least of his carvers (and which is the least is anybody's guess).

But Kevin is right - when you pick out a maker for the re-handling job, he will be in a better position to advise on the type of handle material would work, and perhaps sourcing it as well.

On a hidden tang knife, the length and angle of the tang will definitely impact on what particular piece of stag or ivory might be used.

PS - Love your avatar - what an awesome set!

thanks for the advice guys...i'll send them in to my maker and see what he has....thanks for the kind words roger.....i got that set for me and my best friend to have a matching pair of goos....ryan

keith...they are wild goo's.....tai did the blades and chuck did the handles sheaths and stands.....if you look at tai's or chuck's site you can see pics of the whole set-up.....if i remeber right don't you have the dressed up wild goo keith....i might be remembering wrong.....i always liked that one if it is yours.....ryan

My knife is from just before the Wild Goo collaborations started. The whole knife was made by Tai, and the sheath was made by Chuck. It has a very different blade shape than the more classic ones being made now. The blade is forged from wootz steel that was made by Ric Furrer.

Here you go Kevin........

The fittings on both knife and sheath are Sterling silver - the sheath inlay is emu leg.......

Thank you Chuck. Interesting blade profile. I really like it.
Great looking sheath. Is the belt loop removal?

Kevin - I suppose it could be as it's attached with Chicago screws, but it wasn't designed that way.....

Kind of looked like a snap of sorts attaching the loop. So thought you may have design it to be removable. Again, very nice knife/sheath combination.
