I picked up this little sharpening kit (smiths sharpener) for under $20 and I have to say I'm pretty impressed. I decided to go with a 20 degree edge on the 4 and it turned out pretty nice.

You weren't really re-profiling, as they come from the factory with a 20* per side edge. Maybe slight reprofiling, as the edges are varied, but never far from that.

Whatever it was, it was a more acute angle than was on it originally, you can see it towards the tip. Ignore the #s on the tool, they don't really mean anything.

It looks like you still have a ways to go towards the front. Not knocking you, just sayin'. I have almost the exact same thing going on with a knife I did last night... :D

Well, it took quite a bit of grinding away at it to change the angle.. and a lot of paint to clean off the stones as I went. The smiths tool could be inaccurate as to the 20 degrees.

Yep, there is still a little bit to go the last inch or so to the tip.

Yeah, they're ground ~20 per side by hand anyway, so you'll probably wind up doing re profiling even if you get it perfectly at 20. However, even those types of clamp setups won't get the angle exact because the angle can change the higher up and down the clamp moves.

That looks more like 15 degrees to me. You cant trust the markings on those type of sharpeners because blade height i.e. length from spine to edge, makes a huge difference on how those clamp sharpener jobs work. Check out the online instuctions for the dmt aligner sharpener on dmt's website, it explains it pretty good. But simply put a blade with a greater height will actually get a less steep angle than a shorter blade height with will get a steeper edge grind using the same angle hole on the device. I will stop rambling now...
But good work man.
