Wow what a day this has been. I rec'd 2 custom knives in the mail! The first was a prize that I miraculously won from the Florida Knifemakers Association. (see my other post).
The second, I have been eagerly awaiting. It is a Jones Knives, Model 23, Survival Knife. First off I must say that this is a TREMENDOUS knife. I first saw a photo of it in an article in Combat Knives Magazine. After a little detective work I tracked down Barry and Phillip Jones, of Jones Knives in Danville Virginia. They make some of the finest tactical blades made today. In particular, I was impressed by the looks and specs of their Model 23. I promptly ordered one, and it arrived today!
It would have arrived 2 weeks ago, if I hadn't delayed in getting them the balance. One month turn around - excellent!
The blade is as sweet as they come. It was designed and made perfectly. It sports a 3/16", flat ground, drop point, bead blasted, 7" blade made out of 440C. It has a thick black Micarta handle, that has no rough edges, but at the same time is not polished. Just the way I like 'em. It is full tang, and is VERY stout. The blade tapers gradually from the handle to the tip. It is somewhat similar to a Steel Heart II, but I feel is better overall because it weighs less, is approx. 80 % smaller - although the width of the blade is almost as wide, has a better handle, and a better sheath. The sheath is heavy weight black nylon lined with kydex - just like what Walter Brend used to supply with his Model 2's. It might be made by the same shaeth maker. It is an aggresive, beautiful blade that is meant to be used. If you want to check one out, see the Jan '97 issue of Tactical Knives.
If anyone out there in Bladeforums Land has a Jones Knives, knife, what do you think of it? In particular I'd love to hear from anyone that has a Model 23. Hopefully Barry will be able to post a photo of one someday - he is a member of Bladeforums. I also understand they are creating a web site.
In any case, I'd put this baby up against any knife, any day. Sure it isn't as strong as say a knife that is thicker, but for a realistic survival situation, this knife will take you there and back, as many times as you want to go. I very highly recommend it, and that's a BIG understatement.
Happy trails...
