I just found this video by a guy who actually seems to use his knives instead of the normal tabletop reviews youtube normally has.

In this video he compares both the BRKT production Recluse and Custom Recluse.

Warning: These videos contain an animal being shot, skinned, and dressed. If you are sensitive to that kind of stuff, don't watch

If you didn't watch the video. The reviewer felt that Andy's Recluse is a very good Hunting knife. He found the tip to thin and pointy on the production recluse. He also states that the edge holding on Andy's 01 was better than that of the production. He also greatly prefers the handle ergos of Andy's but we all know that allready.

Great work Andy:thumbup:

I really enjoy virtuovice's videos, even if he is a little difficult to understand most of the time.

i have often thought the custom recluse would make a great hunting knife. i like that he put in work right away on the animal but is all he takes the back straps? maybe he is out a ways and comes back to pack it out later. but if not that is a lot of wasted meat.

on the knife side clearllly custom recluse is better :)

I requested Virtuovice to compare them with actual use
because the original looked like much better in details for me.

He sometimes translate his mate's impression in Japanese but it is incorrect...

Good video and comparison.

I was wondering why he did not take the cape off in one piece, or gut it, then I realized I don't think he was harvesting the whole animal, just the back straps and the groin muscle.

Lot of great meat not being used.

Wow, great videos. Sugoi  Cool to see Andy's work being put to use on a hunt as part of a review.

Subscribed :)

G'day Tony

I agree, it is reassuring to see there are some on youtube that are expressing an opinion that has been informed by real world experience :thumbup:

Wako does indeed use the knives he has bought

I know Wako has noted that he resharpened both before the test. I also noticed that he has provided qualification by pointing out that the custom fiddleback performed better on meat, & the production model seems to perform better on the paper cut test. This suggest to me that the custom still has a bit of a toothy edge, whereas the production has a more refined edge.

I would love to see an edge retention test between the two when used on seasoned hardwood and how this would effect the results he has obtained on meat. As a matter of fact, I think I'll PT him and ask him to try this as a test :D

I must admit that I agree with his observation about the difference between a handfilling handle & a handle that is nimble in use when used for different purposes (i.e. Bushcraft & hunting)

Happy New Year to everyone.

Kind regards
Mick

Remember also that they are two different steels. 01 and a2.

01 excels at the edge. Its ugly working steel. But its really good at the edge.

UGLY!! O1 is beautiful man it shows if a man works a knife or just keeps it to take pics of it. I love the O1. It is the easiet to heat treat as well, is'nt it? Oh yea and the fact that it sharpens back up with ease is a good reason to like it as well.

Its not the easiest to HT. You have to keep it at temperature for an extended time to get the absolute best out of it. I use a digital furnace to do this. But it is the most forgiving. You can start over with 01.
