Great to find HI and this forum thanks to Uncle Bill.
When I called Bill on Monday and asked for a recomendation for my first Khukuri he flaty refused (chuckle)....so I went with my gut and ordered an 18" AK which should arrive tomorrow or the next day.
Excited about this and catching up with the forum, the numerous kamis, their styles and all the abreviations (sigh) I thought I would take a chance and ask for some input about where to go next?
I will let you know about my AK when it arrives and I have had a chance to try it out low limbing some trees for fire protection and cutting up some limbs.
Until then....Thanks for all your great comments and threads.:p

Well... the 18th century is always a favorite of mine, but there are many other khuks you could really enjoy. A BAS would be smaller than the 18" AK, but is a good start to a khukuri collection.

The best idea is to wait until the first khuk arrives, and then decide what your next purchase will be. The AK will give you an idea of what kind of quality HI sells. After that, just pick a khuk you really like, and you won't be disappointed. :D

18" AK?

It'll be more than you can believe. A mere 15" AK blows most people's minds.

Put it this way - folks are scared of being stabbed or slashed. But an unsheathed khuk screams literal dismemberment.

Enjoy.

said as only Rusty can say it!!!

all I can add is: :D:D:D

and Welcome to the Cantina:)

Khukuries are like women and its tough to pick one ultimate khukuri. Some are curvy and full bodied. Some are lithe and quick. And all can be as lethal as they are beautiful...

Me, I like Sirupatis - light enough to move quickly yet hefty enough to chop if need be. But i also have a weakness for the Gelbu Special and Chitlangi. Works of art all of them.

Thanks for the feedback.
I decided on an 18" AK for low limbing trees and have no doubt it will be BIG but then too smaller than an axe and hopefully easier to handle in that application (ever try to swing an axe at waist or shoulder height?)
For a personal khukri I will be looking for something smaller and "faster"...more after I see the 18" AK

Thanks for call and welcome aboard, Prag. If the 18 incher doesn't work for you send it back and we'll try something else.

You are on a quest that will never end, in my opinion. I am new to khukuris, and already I can tell that there is no such thing as having "enough."

I have three at the present time--a Sirupati, an AK, and a Chitlangi. I like all of them for different reasons. The AK gets more use, the Chitlangi more fondling. I have my sights set on an M43 next, or perhaps a Ganga Ram, or Baby Ganga Ram.

Half the fun is contemplating your next grab, so enjoy yourself.

And pull up a seat at the AK table.

Good choice, my first one was an 18" horn handled AK from Sher. It weights about 1kg (2.2lbs), and it is all that I'd hoped a real khuk to be, and more. Anybody I've shown it to has marvelled at it, and recognizes that aggressively angled blade as a "Gurkha knife" or "Nepalese bowie." It is certainly a massive knife, make for the bigger folk, perhaps.

My second choice was the 21" Gelbu Special from Kesar. Its got a lotta reach, and is actually lighter than my AK by almost 8ouunces. I like fullers on a blade, so I just had to have one of these fullered masterpieces. I consider it a fighter, or martial arts styled blade, so I dunno what I'd think of the even lighter Kobras and Sirupatis. They seem to have a big following tho.

Used to be that 80% of my sales were repeat orders. Without doing a lot of research I think that has gone up to about 90%. Sales to new customers are getting to be a rarity.

Andrew do you think your preference for the lighter khuks comes from the knives you're more used to in your country such as the golok?

Welcome to the cantina Prag.:)

You're gonna like the 18" Ak. Bill first sent me the 15" AK and I already knew it was gonna be too small for me, but my sweet wife likes it fine.
I'm almost wishing for an 18" Chitlangi for something shorted and maybe quicker than my 21" model, but then again I have a few that fills the bill in and around that size.
The Hanuman Special with the WW II blade comes to mind.:)

Read some interesting stuff on Hanuman, the monkey/god. Reshaped history in that part of the world...

lol! redvenom. Excelent analogy.
I better not tell my girl i've been flirting with a 15" Bura AK!! :)

Probably due to me not being quite the biggest guy around (5'10" 160 lbs) rather than tradition or culture. I find the lighter 18" khuks more controllable... the skinny guy picks the skinny khuks :D

I have a couple of parangs and goloks too. Fine, rough use tools though not as good a chopper as a khukuri. I have one my dad bought from a village smith some 25+years ago. It has seen lots of hard service and has plenty of scars on the hardwood handle, a healthy layer of stains and some minor chips on the edge. Still works. I am thinking of getting some pictures up when I can.

I figure that many years down the road, my kids will be using my stash of HI khukuries and be thankful to their dad for his undoubted foresight :D
