Well, I would guess it will be a very long time before any of the actual JK hawks will need any refurbishing, I did buy this Vaughan Super Steel hatchet head from John at one of the Gatherings so I guess it's kind of a JK.
The handle was made by a carpenter friend of mine named Ryan. He does all types of carpentry, but specializes in stairs. The handle he made is actually formed from two pieces of hickory flooring that he epoxied together into a kind of laminate. Neither of us really knows how durable this might be but he has a sledge that sports a full sized handle and has used it for over a year with no problems. He is pretty creative and the shape and size of the handle he made is totally his own. I didn't ask for anything other than for him to do what he thought was best.
I am really pleased with the way this turned out. I think it will make a great camping hatchet for general chores. The grip is very comfortable so far with the limited chopping I've done. I did some work to the edge but still need to spend a bit of time on it.
The shape of the handle is pretty unique!
