I finally took some pics of my wonderful set of balisongs made by Eric Maier (aka Mer, but most of you guys already knew that :) )
They're my first stainless handled balisongs, and I just love the weight and tank-like feel of the handles.
Both blades are from a Jaguar bali, but I'll try to find someone to make me some replacement (damascus) blades, because I think the handles are too nice for a pair of Jag blades :D
The polished latchless is a dream to flip, quiet, smooth and fast.
The beadblasted one is a bit slower, but the countersunk slots give lots of grip.

The pictures can be seen here

sweet handles!
how come other balis (for instance from benchmade) don't have more 'original' handle patterns? i'm getting kinda bored with the old bm standard now...

i've heard a lot about getting jags rehandled... does this mean that the jag blades really aren't that bad - only the handles? or is it because the jag is that cheap, that you can just buy some, strip the handles and get it rehandled?
those i've seen so far look very nice. all thanks to mer. :)

Ixpfah, the Jaguar blades are cheap, and they're not made of the best steel too, but Eric had a couple of them laying around, and I didn't have any broken balisongs to send him.

Kyui, I'm not really a DJ, I still need to learn a lot :D
But I just love listening to music, and manipulating and buying vinyl :)

Actually I've seriously been thinking of sending a blade or two off to him myself. As to the Jag blades they aren't that bad. 1sks lists the DF Jags as being of 440 (probably "A" since it's cheaper). I've been drooling over the pics on Mer's page for about a week now.

Actually, the Jag blades are 420 stainless which is pretty good. They aren't that bad, just not finished as well as others. With a little detailing they turn out prety nice. I drill out the pivot pin holes to 3/16" and if necessary replace the tang pin with a 3/16" pin. I've been working with a mold maker friend of mine and will be getting the bulk of the work done on a CNC mill very shortly. That way I'll have a bunch of blanks with everything finished except the holes and skeletonizing or inserts. It will cut my lead time in half hopefully.

Thanks again for all the compliments,

Mer

VERY NICE!!!!...props to mer for his beautiful work. Just curious though...what is mer's webpage adress.

thanks

Contender, take a look two posts up at the bottom of Mer's post, where it says www.maierblades.com. Funny how at the time he only makes handels, yet his web address is maierBLADES.com...how ironic:p

...Or you could have just clicked on the little grey "WWW" box at the bottom of his post...you must be resourceful to survive!
...Or his profile button, then looked at "homepage." I'm sure i could find a few more ways:D

MaierBlades sounded better than maierhandles. :D Always thinking into the future. I hope to have my own blades sometime next year.

I remembered you said you were planning on doing blades sometime which is why i said "at the time," but this was the first time i had noticed the web address and just thought it was kinda funny since we talk about "Mer's handels" quite regularly around here...keep up the awsome work Eric!

Eric :) ...go .org.., and apply for 501C non-profit status...lol. No taxes  .., and less chance of getting investigated for "Bali-Biz" ;)

I have a sort of newbie question here; on all the pics of Mer's handles I've seen so far, none of them have latches. Is this just personal preference on Mer's part, or is there a good reason not to have a latch? Or lack of latch-making facilities? :) Thanks much,

Asha'man

Tony is right, I requested a latchless, because I didn't have one prior to this one :)
The beadblasted one in the pictures does have a latch though, and it latches nice and tight open and closed.

Oh, okay. Cool. :) Does not having a latch serve an actual purpose, like quicker openings or something, or is it just for aesthetics?

Asha'man

Yes being latchless does have it's perks. It is quicker on deployment since you don't have to unlatch and it makes much less noise. If you listen to your bali most of the noise is probably from the latch.

BTW what is the average turn around time on a bali from Mer?
