Remotely operated sniper rifle

I remember in the news some years back a company made a rifle that was mounted on a tripod with auto ranging built in. The operator used a joystick a moved it to acquire targets on a tv monitor and fire with no user vibration to add to the inaccuracy, ala the movie the Jackal. It wasn't big and wireless but it was aimed at LEO's needing rapid accurate shot placement.

I find new similar projects online, but this was completed. Does anyone else remember this?

You might check out the Metal Storm Redback system. It is basically the same as you describe except instead of a sniper rifle it uses multi 40mm grenade launchers.

It's a good idea that it keeps a sniper out of harm's way. But I don't see it being as accurate as a human aimed weapon. If the target is close the aim doesn't have to be as percise, but at 500+ yards I don't see joystick aiming being accurate if the goal is a one shot kill.

If it was the same one...

There was a website that allowed you the opportunity to join-up and get to pull the trigger at various occasions.

I don't remember what the targets were, but there was an appropriate crying and wailing from those who didn't want their chilluns to be exposed to such horrors. Even after they were reassured the targets were not Bambi, Thumper, Flower, or anything else alive and tasty.

Maybe inciting that ridiculous protest was what it was all about in the first place, kind of like the Black Rhino Bullet hoax.

I've seen all the movie versions, seen the remote hunting over the internet stuff, but I was trying to find this remote sniper rifle I saw on a news report on TV , could have been 10 years ago, It came out after the California Hostage fiasco where the first bullet took out the window and the bad guys went shooting the hostages down the line. The guy demo'ing the product had 3 or four targets and just fired as quick as he could from one target to the next, much faster than a man held rifle could.

Thanks all...I'll keep looking, I thought it was a good idea and would have been in production now.

With the right software, something like this could recognize faces. Maybe a satellite link, kinda like the Hawkeye on Ghost In The Shell? The software could move from target to target on command. Tracking each individual target until the command is given to acquire and engage.

The Israeli's use a M-2 .50 cal. fitted with remote control and night sights to control area's. Sometimes they will mount the system to a High lift, to extend it's reach.
