Removal of Brass Tip From Sheath

Have any of you removed the brass tip from the bottom of a Khukuri sheath.

I want to modify the sheath on one of my SN-1's (drill holes to drain water) but I don't want to screw up the brass piece. Any tips on how to get it off with a minimum of damage?

Thanks

Blackdog, I've never tried to remove a brass tip that was glued on real well. The one time I tried to get a tip off, it came off with just a little tug, which means it probably wasn't glued on real well to begin with.

If all you're doing is putting in a drain hole, perhaps the best bet would be to grind off the very end of the brass tip -- at an angle -- then drill up through the hole in the tip that the grinding created. And if you grind the tip at an angle upward toward the back, the hole will not be visible except from the backside; and if you keep the hole small, it should be barely visible even then. Then you won't have to worry about either the sheath or the tip collecting water. Just a thought. Good luck with it however you proceed. Let us know how it goes.

Al,

If you have a heat-gun, try using it to warm up the brass and soften the glue. Hint, keep the heat source moving back and forth. If the gun has a high-low setting, try it on low. We use this methhod at work to remove the glue and tape stuck on things, some of which are 2-3 years old and covered in....?

Steven & Rick,

Thanks for the tip tips (did I really just say that?). Anyway, you get the idea.

I'll try the heat gun first (Wife's hair dryer) then the angle grind/drilling if the heat doesn't work. I hope the tip isn't glued on with the same "gunk" as the handle. That stuff is tougher than woodpecker lips but nasty to work with.

Blackdog: Brass tip removal can be tricky (you don't want to sear the leather), but it looks like you got good info. The trick is getting it off without hurting the leather.

Incidentally, you are the first one I've heard of that wanted to get the tip OFF! A drain hole is a good excuse, though. If the WWIII sheath has one, why shouldn't all sheaths have one?

It is the same stuff. However the bond does not seem to be as strong. I have taken the tips off of mine by just pulling them off. I removed them for drainage reasons mainly but I was also interested in getting reinforced steel tips for awhile. I have not as of yet managed to pull the handle off of a khukuri yet though and I try periodically before heavy use as a precaution.

AL,

Have you had any success in removing the brass tip yet. I mean in all your "spare time". After all, everyone knows you don't have anything going on in your life.:rolleyes

Rick,

I haven't even attempted it yet. I hope to try it on my next day off (Tuesday, I Hope!!). I need some time off to get re-aquainted at the house. Even my dog is growling at me now.

Cliff: You mean with all your strength, you can't pull a handle off a khukuri?

I have this image that you are a huge strong person. No need to confirm or deny (for privacy reasons), but I get the picture of a huge mountain warrior trudging around Canada whopping the tops of trees off with khukuris.

Craig.

Blackdog: Yes, my dog growls at me now - for ignoring her. Question: are dogs' paws adversely affected by walking on snow?

Al,

I've seen pictures of your dog, and how can such a sweet looking dog growl at a perfect stranger I'll never know

Al,

Is that brass tip still stuck on tight?

Rick,

Today, for the first time in a long while, I slept LATE. After I was up for a while and had several cups of coffee, this really nifty woman just walked into my house. Turns out I've been married to her for 26 years.

After we got re-aquainted we went out shopping and then had dinner in this classy place I know of (ask Craig about it, It's called Mineo's). Best draft beer and hot wings on the planet. Just got home and the dogs didn't even growl at me. Things are lookin' up

As for the brass tip on the Khukuri sheath, it'll have to wait for another day.

Mineos: A place that has mastered the art of the culinary delicacy known in many circles as "Poppers." Mmmmm . . . they even used cream cheese (and not chedder, which is totally wrong to do!).
