Repairing a rounded edge?

hello,
I am quite terrible at sharpening. It seems as if the last five years of my life has been rounded the edges over. When I try to go back and flatten them out, it seems as if I just make it worse. I'm even marking the edge and checking it every stroke. It happens to me on every kind of knife grind out there. Can anyone help me?
Thank you in advance,
Eric

how are you sharpening your knives? you might be going past the tip which will round over the edge. you need to stop when you reach the tip.

Sounds like you might want to investigate the rod guided systems such as the Edge Pro, Lansky, GATCO, KME...

I think a guided system is not such a bad idea. Don't have to adopt it forever, but it can demonstrate the value of maintaining consistent angle. I never really understood how sharp a knife edge could be, until I made my first 'good' edge using a Lansky system (that's what I had at the time; the Gatco, DMT Aligner/MagnaGuide and others can do the same for you). The guide will keep the angle for you, and you can focus on the OTHER very important aspects, like regulating pressure, looking for the apex, making the burr, cleaning up the burr, etc. If you pay close attention, a guided system is a great way to learn a whole lot about the process.

AND (this is mandatory, in my book), get yourself a good 10x or better magnifier, and use it with bright light, to watch your progress on your edge.

Thank you for the replys so far. I'm currently sharpening on wet/dry paper and arkansas stones. The guided sharpening setup I use now is the Worksharp. I may try my father's lansky system too. Also what exactly do you mean by going over the tip?
Thanks in advance,
Eric

going past the tip. when you see the tip touch the abrasive you stop. if you go past the tip it will round over the edge. is the worksharp what is rounding over the edge or did you do it while hand sharpening?

I think I know what you mean now, thank you for clearign that up. When I first started using the Worksharp it rounded the edge over but then I found out you stop the belt before the tip leaves the belt. I'm rounding the edge near the tip on sandpaper and stones now. I start thinking about using the lansky guides but I don't think it will work on the knives I am having problems with (Fallkniven S1 and a Kellam puukko). I also have one last question. Since I realized I have been rounding the tip edge I started to mark the edge with a sharpie. I believe I might be making it rounded over by when I see that all over the marker hasnt been shaved off so I slightly change the angle. Could this also be a cause to worsen my problem?
