I wanted to let everbody here know that Chris passed a few days ago. He was 61 years old. I know he will be missed.

I'm sorry, not to be rude but was he a forum member or was he someone well known in the survival community?

Either way, God bless his friends and family.

He founded World Survival Institute in Alaska. I've seen his name come up here a few times. I guess it hits a little closer to home for me, I grew up living next door to his family. I never met him myself when he came to town, but I've known his family for over twenty years.

I remember reading a number of very informative articles he wrote for 'Survival Guide' in the Eighties. One in particular was about bears. Good stuff.

That's too bad, alot of knowledge has been lost. He was one of the best survival instructors around. Over the years I bought many of his firestarters and he and his wife were always very friendly. I loved all of his articles in American Survival Guide as well. He will be missed.

Wow, a great loss.

It was because of his article on chosing the right survival knife in American Survival Guide that I first found reasons to upgrade to a better level of knives.

He will be missed.

It was Chris Janowsky and 'American Survival Guide' that really got me started with my passion for knives, the outdoors and preparedness / survival.

One time, I ordered a video from him, over the phone. We must have talked for 1/2 hour or more - very personable man! One of the things we discussed were magnesium fire starters and he told me that he sold a good one.

When my video arrived, he had included one, no charge, with a little note thanking me for the conversation - not that he had learned anything from me (my words, not his). I had the impression, that it kind of summed up the man he was. Sorry to hear the news.

My condolences, to his family and all his students. I didn't know him personally, but enjoyed his book, videos and articles in the old ASG, very much.

Truly a great outdoorsman.

Happy trails.

( Thanks to M&M for letting us know)

I once called Chris up to order his survival videos. He picked up the phone to take my order and told me he was having trouble writing it down because he got a bit of frost bite from working his trap line. He reminded me of a cross between Mors Kochanski and Ron Hood. He lived in Tok, Alaska. Every time I watch his videos I remember our talk. Hope his family is well.

ALONE. While researching the new upcoming History TV Channel "Survival" show, I found this old thread. I am deeply sadden to learn of Chris Janowsky passing.
I met Chris (and his former wife) in Las Vegas many years ago at a "Survival" show. I am lucky to own a "personally signed" copy of Chris's book which I will forever treasure. I also have several hand written/personal letters from Chris (stored away somewhere) when we were communicating back in the late 80's/early 90's when I lived in California. Funny, I recall how I use to send Cigars to Chris in Alaska as they were difficult for him to obtain. Chris was also a Military Vet.
Chris once told me this was one of his favorite songs : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cTBx-hHf4BE
