Hi All,

The hawk bug is biting me pretty bad (again) and I'm considering either the Ft. Turner or the Bear Mountain Ranger hawk. I've done some searches and see that Dana's are universally loved. The BM seems to be quite good (but I am aware of the reported problems had in the past with them) Anyone own or have experince with either/both? Should I just go custom? Wonder if one of the awesom hawk smith's in here would be interested?

Thanks in advance!:)

The RR Hawk I have is the older ATC one made before the production of that model went to Bear Mtn.

They're virtually the same.

It's a really stout Hawk and well made but it the bit is significantly thicker compared to Ft Turner's forging.

I'd pick the Ft Turner because it's lighter weight yet still very tough and well made.

i wouldn't deal with the BM. Fine product but probably not worth the hassle:o I also know Spark got rid of their forum they had so that is proabably another bad sign for their business.

here is a pic of my RR spike hawk back when ATC had the traditional line before BM took over. Great hawk and worth owning. Just wouldn't buy one new from them.

Thanks crossada!

Any experience/thoughts on the FT. Turner? I probably should bite the bullet and order something a bit diffeent from 2 Hawks (warbeast), something from Stephen at North River in a similer style to the Rangers or maybe someone here.

Unfortunately never had a FT but never once read a bad review of the hawks or man so you can't go wrong imo.

Here is a North River i own. It is a smaller hawk obviously but it really is awesome. There is so much detailing to it with the filing and patina finish to give a rustic appearance it is too nice to use:foot: The only negative to me about it is the handle is of smaller diameter than i prefer but paracord wraps seem to be what most do around here for that.

The McClemore book is top notch stuff in the classical style. His line drawings are precise and makes it simple to use. I know he has a DVD out now from Paladin Press that FSC Jedi did a review on if i remember right. Should be good too. The Keating stuff follows a FMA approach which would take considerable more practice imo to become proficient at. The Cold Steel set is probably the best introductory set on the market and a great starting place for hawk combatives. Shop around and you can find good prices on them.

Thanks crossada!

I have reached of to Stephen with a hawk idea..I may end up with another one from him! My poll hawk from him has 'medium diameter" but if really a good fit for me.

I don't have the Roger's Ranger, but I do have a custom made one from Ft Turner, and I can't recommend them enough. He uses an interesting method of forge welding a 1095 edge onto a 1050 bit, giving you a very tough head and a hard, sharp edge that won't roll. When he was working with me on mine, there were a lot of delays because the military folks were buying a lot of the RR hawks, and they got theirs first (a policy I agree with).
