Hello everyone!
It's my firs post on this forum and first question. I want to buy good tactical folder for selfdefense and fighting. I found two knives looking very nice to me: Emerson SpecWAr (tanto combo) and Kershaw Boa. Are these knives real good or maybe there are much better ones?
Just don't tell me - 'go to the nearest shop and ask' because i live in Poland and here we don't have as many good knife shops as you do.
I'd be grateful for any advise. :)

Out of those two the Specwar is much better for defense and fighting. Other emersons are good as well such as CQC-7 and Commander. BM also makes good knives also.

I have a CRKT Kit Carson m16/14 with the partialy serrated edge and tanto blade it is a great, tough, sturdy knife for about $90 U.S. . I use it for everything from peeling apples to cutting rope and plastic. It is a large folder but it sits well in a jeans pocket, and is very very fast opening because of the little flipper thing on the gaurd, that also acts as a gaurd when the blade is opened. Try it you'll like it!!!! luck to ya, Soop

First of all I want to say that you need a lot of hand on practice and training with using the knife in hand-to-hand combat BEFORE you could use the tactical folder for self defence. If you are not trained you have a very good chance of being hurt with your own blade.

Second, knife can be effective but it forces you to hurt your opponent pretty bad, and it usually looks kind of screwed up in the court...

That being said you need to look for knife that can do good slashing damage. Stabbing with pocket knife is not as effective as slashing with one... IMHO one of the best fighting knives out there is Spyderco Chinook. It can cause very excessive cuts for a folder because of it's blade geometry.

Emerson knives are designed for defensive use. Unlike one2gofst, I think the Boa is also well suited to defense. On working days I alternate between an Emerson Commander and a Kershaw Boa as my defensive folder.

The Boa is pretty, but there's a lot of substance to go with the style. 440V gives you a razor edge that will stay that way. The blade shape gives you a good point for thrusting and a great belly for slashing, while the lower guard insures that you can hard thrust without slipping.

I'd go fro the Emerson. Emersons are chisel ground, which creates a larger wound channel. Add to that, the wave opener and you can't beat it. The Specwar is a great knife, but why not get the SOFCK. It's basically a Specwar that opens on the draw.

I would go with an Emerson, however, if you did not want to spend that kind of money and could pick up a CRKT M-16-04, and just re-profile from Tanto to a clip point, you would have a great all-around EDC for a lot less money.......wolf

Hmmmm....I'm not trying to be argumentative, but WHO told you that? In fact, the shorter the blade, the more you SHOULD stab to reach vital organs, veins/arteries, etc. Yes, slashing will make someone bleed, but many times the damage only LOOKS worse because of the blood. Eventually he will bleed out, but he will not be subdued as fast as a STAB under the armpit or in the neck, or in the kidneys, or.....

It all depends on your fighting style... For me it would be easier to slash at the wrist then to hit live, aware target in the armpit with a 3.5" blade...

Also if you have more than one opponent, stabbing gets more complicated. You are going to open yourself to the attack.

Well Triada, I hope you never get into a cutting scrape with the law, because the sort of things you said here will go a long way in demonstrating your pre-disposition to mayhem. Ever hear of a wrongful death civil suit? Can you say damages? I suspect you are young and foolish, but you need to think a little more before you commit your thoughts to a public forum. Say, Uh, Martial Arts, not "fighting."

I never said the Boa is bad, I just said the Emersons are much better as a defensive blade. G10 is better than aluminum for a defensive handle, and that is a major factor IMO. They are also chisel ground. Would I be comfortable with a Boa, sure. Would I rather have an Emerson, you bet!

Fair enough. I feel somewhat differently about the details, but we seem to agree that they're both good knives to have in a fight. :)
