vs. oval hole ! Was there ever aSpyderco with an oval hole?I think an oval hole would protrude less on the back making for a slightly smaller knife.

No, it would make it a Benchmade - except for the Skirmish (Sorry, I couldn't resist :o )

A believe that the circle is by far the best opening device. Your finger fits into The circle and remains in uniform contact throughout all opening process. Sliding smoothly in well a circular manner. It is almost an unfair advantage, however spyderco did come up with a first. And there are many other things a love about spyderco. So the advantage could have gone to a better company.

i find that any hole is just fine, far better than any stud or disk.

Though the wave on my new endura may just be the best thing since the thumb hole. (f*ck sliced bread)

Hi everybody!
I'm a newcomer in this forum and english is not my mother tongue, but I will give my best.
5-6 weeks ago I dont know anything about spyderco, but as I saw in the german knife forum pictures from spyderco collectors, I was influenced. The round hole is just the reason why! :p
Meanwhile I own 5 spydies and tomorrow I will get the 6th one, an endura emmerson waved. It is the german spyderco forum knife 2005!

Well, you only need half a hole to open and the lower half a hole to close, don't you? I am not saying an oval is better but I would not mind having a Calypso ZDP with an oval hole!!

At first the round hole kinda bugged me. But I have gotten used to it. It does offer more control I feel.

You'll love the emerson waved endura. I just got mine today and i can't stop playing with it. Fastest opening knife i have ever seen. Personally i think it's faster and easier to deploy than the emersons i've played with due to the massively oversized wave.

And if anyone is debating whether or not the wave feature on the endura is everything it's made out to be, this should push you over the edge: The wave on the endura is the perfect size to open a bottle of beer. Seriously, i just popped open a cold one with my endura. This knife rules my world.

I like the thumb hole a lot. It also gives spyderco knives a distinct look you either hate or love. I love the look.

An oval hole can work very well, if done right.

For example, the Buck Odyssey (great knife) has an oval thumb-hole that works very well; around as well as the round Spydie-hole.
I'm comparing the two different holes right now on my two usual EDC's: Centofante III (also a great knife) vs. Buck Odyssey 182 (carbon fiber, ATS-34); yup: both holes work darn well.
Of course, not all oval holes may work as well as the Odyssey's.
And, there's more to the proper working of a thumb-hole than just the shape of the hole. The whole handle/blade package has to be done right, and Spyderco is very good at that.
And, the Odyssey is the only holey(?) knife that I have besides my numerous Spydercos.

No oval hole, but once upon a time there was a pair of trapezoidal depressions...
