Rounding out the collection.

As part of my folder collection strategy I'm now starting a search for a custom folder to add to the collection. I'd be pleased to hear suggestions from the crowd, or makers, on mid priced knives. By mid price I'm talking around $US150 - $US350

(I'm especially keen to hear about any Oz makers).

I was something that could be considered a user rather than a collector or "art" piece.

I don't want a modified or fancy production folder, I want a more or less one of a kind custom made job.

If you know sombody who makes nice folders in that price range and have a website link post it here. Thanks.

Might want to check out the knife makers for sale forum here.
There are plenty of makers that make some really nice stuff and you can search the archives. Even if they have sold that one they can take an order for another one. Good luck!

This is interesting, here I am ready to buy a custom folder and giving you makers a chance to alert me to your fine wares and ....... nothing.

Such is life!

It will be very difficult to find a one of a kind knife in your price range. I have a Brian Tighe folder, which is not one of a kind, and it cost $525. You might have to consider spending more money, or settle for a high end production model.

Yes, I agree that my price range is somewhat restrictive but that's about all that's in the budget right now unfortunately. I'm not looking for anything particularly fancy, just well made. I certainly don't want to undervalue somebody's hard work but IF anyone does make a folder in that range let me know. If they don't, so be it, I'll wait till I can afford whatever the going rate is.

Could be just what the doctor ordered...

Peter Marker, from Australia. Good craftsmanship and good prices, nice guy to deal with as well!

Although his prices have gone up a little recently he's still very reasonable. The first knife I bought from him was a bolstered 4" blade tactical for ~$150 about 3 years ago .

It might be a bit difficult to find a custom made knife in that price range, but certanily not impossible. Just recently I picked up a knife by Bill Buxton at the upper end of your price range. It is nothing fancy, just a basic working liner lock folder with a forged blade. I also picked up a knife by Aaron Frederick in the middle of that range, again nothing fancy but a solid working knife.

I don't really know of any Oz makers off hand though, sorry. With some looking you will be able to add a nice custom made working knife to your collection.

Mike Obenauf, not one of a kind, he only makes a few models, but smooth as can be and very solid. $350 or so.

I'd second Dav Winch, I think you might live fairly close, Dav's in Canberra.

Has anyone mentioned Jason Cutter from Melbourne? He posts a lot of good looking knives at reasonable prices. He seems to go for unique designs rather than a standard line.

Thanks for all the suggestions guys, some great stuff to look through. So many great knives, so little money.

Yes Esav, I know about Jason, I even have one of his fixed blade knives.
You can see it HERE. I don't think he makes folders though. I might ask him.

Keith: Yes, I know about them. trouble is with a lot of Oz makers is that many of them don't seem to have web pages or they can be hard to find. It's a bugger but it ads to the fun of the challenge I guess. :)

I'll be checking out the other suggestions too.

Really need to try Dav Winch. Here's his web site http://www.davidwinchhandtools.com/

Dav really thinks outside the box, is very reasonable priced, is great to talk with and loves a challenge!
Hmmmmmmmmm... All I get is a front page, there doesn't appear to be any links to any further pages, I even looked at the source code of the page and that seems to be all there is. Maybe he's working on it or something.

It worked for me, but you have to wait for the applets to load.

Ahhh.. I'm sitting behind a firewall that screens out a lot of crap like that. Might try it on another non firewalled computer and see what happens.
