Today I was at russian blade show Klinok-2002 (I can translate this like "Blade-2002" ). There where a lot of wery cool knives, I picked up four: "White Bear" by NOKS, "Kolonok" by Marychev, nameless one from "Russain Darts" and Opinel #10 hi-carbon.
Here is photos of two most inetersting:

and
Kolonok

Kolonok was only russain folder, which opens smooth, fixes well and has no blade play. Thanx a lot for Marychev - great knive, especially for a price.
If anybody interested, ask me here.

Cool knives, but it took like an hour or so to download the pictures. What sort of material is the handle on that folder and what sort of price is a piece like that? Also, what is the current exchange rate approxiamtely? Its been awhile and last time I was there it was right around 25 rubles/ 1 dollar.

Sorry, but my hosting has wery thin channel to USA, I think. Sizes are under 100K, so I can't figure out any other problem.
Current exchange rate is around 31 robubles/1 dollar.
Folder hande is made of wood( hazelnut?) (outer layer, inner is steel).
Price is 700r./22$, including leather sheath.
Blade material is 95X18, 440B or 440C analog.
Folders are hand-made ( I think ), and manually tuned. There where many different blade/handle shapes (including two tantos) at same price. Same folders with damascus blades are 2200r/70$, but I'm not used any.
Fixed blade White Bear is 1800r./58$ (including leather sheath). It has thick blade (6mm) and wery good balance for such weight due heavy handle, especially it's end oppsite to blade.

Sounds like a really nice piece. I will have to look you up if I am in Russia again. I would really like to see some of these Russian knives firsthand.

Mr Dmitry Platonov I am interested in the “White Bear” knife, what steel is it made out of? What is RC hardens? What is the blade length? What is your overall impression? Are you going to use it for camping / hunting or do you have any over opportunity to test the knife’s performance? And finally where can I get one? :D

Dmitry, thanks for sharing your pictures with us.
Looks like some excelent quality items are coming out of Russia. What would those two holes in the blade/handle (didnt really get the full picture, just assumed) be there? Also where was this blade show held in russia? Did they have any Western items to show off?

2survivor:
I don't care about steel, but I think it is some kind of high-alloy mid-carbon stainless steel.
It is hardened to 56 HRC, but i'm not sure - I'll check docs later. Blade length is 15cm. Overal impression - WOW. After I take this one in hand, I coldn't resist. Center of balance is near guard, so knive isn't so good for chopping, as machete, but it drives very well.
I can check its perfomance only this summer, and I'll report here.
I can't say about it's availability in US, but it is available Moscow-wide. This is production of NOKS, manufacturer of Smersh And OSA series( personally I don't like their knives, except this one).

Holes are for rope (I didn'n know exact term)
Show was in Moscow, Central House of Painter (huh, this translation is really ugly). There where some western vendors represented - Opinel, Spyderco, Benchmade and so on, not by themselfs, but by their dealers.

Well I have relatives in Moscow so if you could recommend a knife shop not to far from Noviy Arbat I could get my aunt to buy it fore me there and send it to me here in Australia by post.;)

Sending such thing to Australia? Are you kiddnig? This thing is really large and looks _evil_. Our customhouse workers will catch it at customhouse. It is legal to send it, I think, but will take much time and nerves.

Two commercial post services which I call dont want to deliver knives except folders.
But state post service can dilever knives, except cold weapons.
First of all, you must ensure this knife isn't cold weapon in your country. If is, post service woldn't deliver it at all.

Do you ever travel to Russia or have your Aunt visit you? If so, you can put one of those in a suitcase and get it in, no problems.

Today I made first tests of White Bear at the forest. Before this, I slightly sharpen knife (it passes printer paper test, but fails newspaper test). Marks are (first impression) (5 max):
Chopping - 4 (machete would be better, but I was able take down one-inch dry tree with 8-9 strikes)
Slicing - 4 ( due blade thickness )
Cutting - 4 ( it's a bit heavy machine )
Stabbing/piercing - 2 ( blade geometry)

After all tests it still was able to pass printer paper test, impression that is has same sharpness.

Overal impression - I'm not disappointed. Still WOW. Design is great, balance is great, knife is great. My friends said - "I want such one". One minus - it's not wery lightweight. But lighter than axe 8).

P.S.
I find my Opinel.
My grandmother took it to do something. She sad that it (opinel) is good knife.
