A while back Tactical Knives did a review on some Russian Military Knives and 1 was called the Smersh 4 I believe. It looked like a 5.5 inch Puukko.

Does anyone know who seels these knives?

No prob.

I've been curious about these knives for some time myself. It would be nice to hear some first hand experiences. Looking at the specifications, they seem to be potentially good all-around knives. But the Russian steel designation U8 is a mystery and they sell for somewhat high prices, mostly. How did TK rate the knife?

I'd really like to know more about the manufacturer as well. The Finnish store I linked in my previous post names the factory as Noks. Are their products of quality?

Perhaps the Russian forum members could shed more light on the subject.

According to the TK article the knife company is actually called HOKC (roughly translated "Knives Construction Skrylev") Blade steel composition was roughly 0.5% carbon, 14% chromium, 1% molybdenum, and 1% vanadium. Edge is described as a flat grind with a fairly steep secondary bevel. Blade length was 5.5 inches, 3/4 inches wide, and 7/32 inches thick. The article shows the handle on the Smersh-4 as the same as the Smersh-5. Regardless the handle is described as a frost resistant rubber. Handle length is 4 1/4 inches in length.

The knife was described as doing very well in both edge retention and tip strength. The usual tests of cutting tomatoes and sharpening wooden stakes provided no problems. Mainly they focused on the Smersh-4 as they did not have a Smersh-5. The Smersh-5 was described as having a longer blade (6 inches vs 5.5), and a guard that has a wire breaker capability in the notch between top guard and blade.

I personally do not like the look of the grip on the current Smersh-4. The Smersh-5 however I like the look and might just buy 1 as the price is not to bad.

Thanks for the info, especially on the steel composition.

I think that HOKC and NOKS are actually the same thing. HOKC just being written with the Russian cyrillic alphabet.

If you get one, please write back how it performs for you.

Will do. Sadly since the birth of my 2nd boy, 2 years old now, my free time to go camping and hunting has been very little. The only knives that get any use from me now are my various pocketknives. Camping trip planned for the fall though.

Thought that I must give abit of warning.
NOKS is known to be rather... controversial knives acconding to Russian sites. Some people swear it ("sharpened prybar" and even worse words) -- some like it. I heard about SMERSH-5 being broken in the widest part of blade by minor bending.

I've heard there are different versions of Smersh knives for military and civilian market, mainly due to ridiculous knife law in Russia....

A guy had even broken Smersh-5 by hands (experimenting): see the pics.

There are definitely different opinions, but it is mainly sold as a "camper's" knife, not a military or special force issue (SMERSH was a kind of special force of Russia in WW-II). And if a thing in Rusland bears such an ear-catching name, it means commercial interest takes over the quliaty. High-quality is still the military quality there, and those names are not breath-taking (Tula arsenal or IzhMash).
My 2 centes.

I believe SMERSH was the Soviet military counterintelligence service. The name came from contracting the Russian words for "Death to Spies!" (SMERt SHpiyonom!)
