I hope no one gets to pissed that this isnt exactly knife related but I figured you guys that spend so much time trying to prevent rust might be able to tell me how to create it. Some of the guys that have been here a while know Im an exhibits person and artist. I could probably paint a rust like appearence but how do I get the real McCoy. What is a sure and fast way to take shinny nail heads and make them rusty.
Thanks for any help.

Polish them, then heat them up until they are red, finally after they are air cooled put water on them over night.

I have browned quite a few carbon steel blades by using the same method to brown muzzleoader barrels. It takes a damp cabinet and mild acid bu8t the rust created is very even and has a nice brown color. look up "browning" and see what you come up with. I dont have the time to type it all out!

I over heard a man asking an old gun maker(muzzleloader) how to go about browning barrels and such. And he said, "piss on it and throw it out in the back yard."

I believe that the latest issue of KI has an article about rust/browning by "The Fisk" ...
I would try sanding/polishing followed by a little saltwater in a jar in the sun.
Good luck,
Wally

Boriqua,Do you have allot of nails to rust? and out of curiosity what are you doing with rusty headed nails?
Metal will rust as soon as you sand it to bare metal and then to help it along just set it in the sun and spray them down with a water based solution that is mixed with anything that is acidy such as vinegar,or salt works...The fastest way to make them rust and look natiral is to heat them red and then wet them down....You can always ask at the local hardware store and see if they have a box of old nails that has gotten wet and the nails are rusting....
Good Luck with the project,
Bruce

Get a spritzer bottle, fillit w/ 1/2 water, and 1/2 laundry bleach. Spritz the piece, cover w/ a damp paper or cloth towel and it will rust up quick. Rinse w/ clear water to neutralize the bleach when at the right point.

I once spilled a little ferric chloride[same
stuff used to etch damascus] on my shop floor.
Even though I thought that I cleaned up the mess, every piece of steel in the general area of the spill had a light coating of rust on it
by the next day. You may want to try cleaning
the parts and giving them a dip in ferric.
