I would like peoples' opinions on this matter. I feel like getting another toy err knife... :D Is the s30v steel blade on the new native worth getting if i have the vg10 bladed native? Is it that much better? I mean it's not that expensive so that's kinda why i want to get it hehe. Thanks for any input in advance :)

I don't have one in S30V yet, mine's on backorder. I DO have a Spyderco ATR in S30V though & I have been comparing it to my other VG10 Spydercos. The S30V steel seems to take a little sharper edge. Not sure about edge holding cause I have'nt done any real cutting with em side by side yet. I've tried to give them the same sharpening treatment, right down to the stropping. Both are razors.. If you really like the knife, I'd say go for it. I tend to trust Spyderco's choices in steel. They are always looking for something better. I've had 2 police models for years, right & left handed, they're part of my EDC rotation.

You'll have to be one seriously picky guy to notice the difference. I would take either of those steels as an EDC without a second thought, and would only allow the steel choice to be the deciding factor if every other part of the design were the same. VG-10 is an excellent steel and so is S30V.

Realistically, the differences are so small you would have to do extensive testing to tell the difference. You certainly don't need the newer Native.

But what does need have to do with buying a knife? :D What you have here is a certifiable excuse for going out and buying a brand new toy to play with! By all means, do it! :p

I'd say there's a differeence between vg10 and s30v. Well, I have the 440V, and it does cut very aggressively.
Try heating 550 cord so that when you cut it, it doesn't fray, and use a 440V/s30v knife and a VG10 to try. You are likely tofind that the 440V will go through with one cut, while the vg10 doesn't.

VG-10 is an excellent all round steel. I think a prior comment is appropriate - you would under normal circumstances not notice a difference. I would not replace an existing knife with an s30v.

Although I own quite a few Spyderco knives, my knowledge of all the variations within a model is extremely limited. Given that, I may be off base here, but the only VG10 Natives that I have seen are Native III's and the only S30V ones I've seen are Native I's. If you are comparing the same knife, in these two steels, then IMHO, the difference will be minimal to non-existant. On the other hand, if you own a Native III and are contemplating the purchase of a Native I, then there are other differences aside from the steel that may make purchasing it more or less attractive to you.

The Native III is thicker overall. It has a much thicker handle and a very slightly thinner blade than the Native I. If you like the feel of the III, then the I may feel a bit too slim. If the III feels a tad thick, either in you hand or in your pocket, then you might prefer the I. Also the Native III handle is contoured, thicker in the middle, slimmer towards the butt end, with thumb and finger pads while the Native I is flat. The III also has a stronger lock spring, so it does take a bit more thumb pressure to open, but both are very smooth. The rest of the differences are almost pure esthetics, wire clip vs solid clip, raised thumb bumps on the blade vs thumb grooves, and the way the spine is tapered.

wow, interesting info. I didn't realize the nativeIII and the nativeI were that much different. I really like the nativeIII, but for me it's too thick. I don't like carrying it outside the house. I normally carry my d2 mini griptilian, maybe the nativeI will also be an option for an edc. thanks :)
