hey scott and everyone else ,

i saw on your website that you shot a tusker blade
made out of S7 Steel from 10 yards away with a
.41 magnum . all i know of S7 Steel is that it can
be used in jackhammer bits . so i was wondering
if you can enlighten me. how do you like it ?
what are your experience performence wise ?
do you still use it ? can one order a knife from
you in this steel ? how does it measure up against
O2 and A2 steel ? ive emailed you awhile back about
getting a knife im still saving my pennies.
(wedding was last saturday !).
thanks for reading everyone

Congrates to you and your Bride. I haven't worked with S7 for quite some time. Problem with S7 is that in order to maintain optimum shock value, it can only be tempered to 57 rc. In other words, it's not going to hold an edge very well. S5 is the better choice in shock steels. Problem is no one has it available in barstock for knifemaking. To have it custom cut is expensive.
I still have some S7 steel if you'd like to have a knife made from it but I'd recommend going with A2 instead. Better edge holding and is still a tough steel for hard use. I have many A2 Tuskers overseas in the war zones we are involved in.

scott,

thanks for the speedy reply and thanks for the congrates
the best thing ive done all year :) !!!...on your recommendation
i think ill stick to either A2 or O2 steel dont know which i want
a knife made out of yet. but i want you input on the design i
want its modeled after your personal semi skinner pattern
in your 4/26/08 thread still a favorite. my ideas include blade
length about 5 1/2 to 6 inches, the curve on the spine of the
blade to be a little bit more pronounced, a choil, and maybe
some kind of wood handles. when i emailed you last you said
a knife like above would run about $300 is this still true ?
also i would like to talk to about some other things but that
can wait til i email you later. thanks again

Frank, email me and I will give you my cell #. It is much easier to discuss the fine details of what you want over the phone.
Price will be determined by exactly what you want.

will do scott thought i will be a while til i have the money together
i email you this weekend or early next week if thats ok ?

frc505,

If you want to check out S7, that's the steel Scrap Yard Knives uses most often. They have a proprietary heat treat to get the most out of the material.

thanks ray!! ya ive been eyeing the yard keeper and the dumpster mutt le but i'm really into scott's work it rocks plus i like buying from and supporting small business's since my dad had his own flooring company!!!
