Yep...sad day indeed. I decided that trap shooting was not going to be as important in the upcoming months as more practical applications might be. Tonight I took off the Fajen Thumbhole Trap Stock off of my old 1100 and replaced it with a Speedfeed stock. This reduced the weight of my shotgun by about 2 pounds and did make it much faster handling. I did retain the 26 inch Hasting straight rifled barrel as it allows the longer magazine tube. The straight rifled barrel combined with a modified choke makes this shoot a very tight buckshot pattern. Now my 1100 will hold 11 rounds of 00 Buck with 4 slugs stored in the butt stock. Not nearly as pretty but much more practical. The Fajen stock will go into storage to await happier days....

Good lord, 11 rounds with 4 more on board.... that will keep the streets swept clean.

If you're going to do something...do it right my Pappy always said...

This will perform nicely for practical shooting competitions this summer as well. Only thing I dislike about the 1100 is the inabilty to easily eject a chambered round and switch to a different type of ammo. You have to eject the chambered round, shake out the round that was released from the magazine and then drop in the new ammo. Benelli solved that problem years ago in the 121 as well as the newer Super 90's, they only release a round from the magazine if they trigger is pulled or you press a release, makes changing ammo much faster and easier.

I've had a Speedfeed on a Mossberg 590 since before the first gun ban. It is a great stock system...much better than the current rage of putting an AR type buttstock on a shotgun.

While I agree with you that it is the current rage, have you tried the Knoxx (now Blackhawk) SpecOps stock? Felt recoil is dramatically reduced.

I never felt a 12 gauge had enough recoil to merit the need for recoil reducing stocks but that is just me. I suppose years of shooting big bore rifles and thousands of rounds of trap just made me somewhat immune to it. Where I do have problems starting is in my wrists. Years of pistol shooting has caused deterioration of the cartilage that provides cushioning between the bones.

No I haven't. Thanks for mentioning that. Seems like just the thing to help the mrs. handle the 12 gauge that much better.

I use buttstock-mounted mercury recoil reducers in both my 590 and my Benelli M3 Super90......and feel they work to reduce perceived recoil substantially....the Benelli is Factory marked, the Mossberg is aftermarket, filled the stock with strips of black t-shirt soaked in epoxy, with a pvc tube in the center for seating the mercury tube.....works like a charm, is MAYBE a 2 hour project.

The mitigating factor about the Knox that caused it to be rejected is that you have to remove the stock to fieldstrip your weapon after the installation.....that is unacceptable to me.

Best Regards,

The Knoxx stock also weigh in excess of 2 pounds, If I wanted to stay that heavy I would have kept the Fajen stock on it. My goal was to lighten the shotgun, not make it heavier.

I put a Knoxx SpecOps folder on my 14" 870, and as a result I can shoot it like a giant handgun, Isoceles stance. The recoil damping system is amazing. I even tried a few one-handed shots with slugs, just because the little female LEO in the Knoxx videos does it. Not comfortable by any means, but do-able. IMHO, the Knoxx system is to shotgun what stocks what Cree LEDs are to flashlights.

When I was an idiot teenager (ah but I repeat myself), we used to shoot a Mossberg 500 with a pistol grip one handed. Extra cred for slugs and 3 inch mag shells. Dangerous, stupid, and wasteful come to mind. :D

I have. I purchased a Knoxx stock for my turkey set up. While it does decrease the recoil a SIGNIFICANT amount, the poor design of little to no drop means that it transfers most of the remaining recoil to your right cheek bone. This sucks while you are patterning your ammo, but is rarely felt upon shooting at a turkey. At some point, when I have money again, I will replace it with a thumb-hole stock that has proper drop.

Now my 1100 will hold 11 rounds of 00 Buck with 4 slugs stored in the butt stock.

Any plans to add a side saddle? I've invested in some Mesa Tactical products recently and really like them as companions to the speed feed.

I have seen side saddles ammo carriers tear up too many receivers. If you shoot your shotgun a lot like I tend to the weight batters the action holes in the receiver over time. This isn't a problem for most people as they don't shot very much but I shoot mine more than most. Fifteen rounds should take care of any problems long enough for me to pick up a different firearm should I run the 1100 dry. As always a New York reload is going to be much faster, in home the 1100 is going to be backing up my H&K 121.

Mongo...the easiest solution to the cheek slap is to add a Cheek-Eez pad to the comb of the stock. I use them on a couple guns that slap my face and they make a huge difference.
