Hey guys,My girlfriend just got me a SAK fieldmaster and my question is what would you use the hook for.I noticed alot of models have this feature and my only question is what would you use it for.
Thanks in advance,RYAN

do you mean the can opener?
The SAK can opener looks like a semi-circle blade with an extention on the bottom which hooks on the bottom of the rim.

THese can openers cut on the push as opposed to the pull as on the P-38 can openers.

I understand that one of the possible uses for the "hook", is to pick up and/or carry things (parcels?) that are tied up with string or cord. It can be tricky or painful on your hands to carry heavy things by the string or cord.

I've had several SAK's over the years that have had such a hook, but I've never used it for anything!

"They" say cord is still used in Europe to bind packages.
I personally don't know that to be true but that is what the
hook is for. A handle to carry heavy cord bound packages.

the hook can also be used to tighten shoelaces on boots. it works fairly well. start from bottom and yank up notch by notch.

the image of a little swiss boy carrying a brown paper wrapped parcel through the streets of switzerland just cracks me up though.
"MUMMY may I have some JAM?"
"You have been a good boy, Franz you can have jam and tarts!"
"oh gee, mummy, I like picking packages up from the post!"
"oh Franz, what will we do when you get older?"

Tightwad:

In Europe they still bind packages with twine. you should see the ehavy paper that is used as well!

By "crochet" it simply means that it can be used to work with cord or line. Many use it to re-tighten, adjust, or loosen laces without having to unlash your entire boot, as Chrisaloia notes. This is esp. handy if you need to relieve/adjust lace tension while in the rain or while sitting at an awkward angle or slope, etc. You can also use it to assist with tightening, adjusting, untying knots, i.e., "crocheting" your line, etc.

You can also use the SAK parcel hook to give you extra power when opening a pull-top can such as a sardine can. You hook it into the finger ring.

BTW, love the Fieldmaster, it's a great package.

One time, the cord on my raincoat that pulls the hood tight had gotten stuck inside the hood, a few inches back from the opening. I couldn't retrieve it with my fingers, but the SAK hook did the trick.

I am totally mystified by the Franz story. Why would you need a kid to carry packages? Do people actually eat "jam and tarts" in Switzerland? Sounds like England to me.
