This explorer was a much whiter. I bought it from the factory while in Switzerland in the early to mid 90s. It was a new fancy model with a multi-purpose hook
. The colour change to cream just came with 25 odd years of use mate. I was told by the sales lady at the time, and I'm not sure if it's 100% true, that white scales were only available from the factory store.
Oh, wow! So that is not cream, that's what my white ones will look like with years of use?! Awesome! I don't know about at the time, but nowadays there are definitely certain models from Vic that you can get in white, the Huntsman, Climber, Farmer and SD Classic. But, I like the white with a design... because, as I learned with my beloved Dessert Warrior donut SD Classic, most of the cellador graphics fade fast. Not so with the white ones. Not only with the Moomin models (discontinued unfortunately, they had black, too, so cool) but a certain Finnish artist also does things like willow grouse, reindeer, geese, mosquito, etc inscriptions on the white SAKS. These inscriptions stay there longer, I don't know why, maybe it's that white is a central color scheme.
I have a Super Tinker, also white, also with a Moomin inscription (see pic above for what I'm talking about, I'm like six deep into this style now, from Escorts to Campers, no plain white actually) and I got that not just for the inscription, but I wanted "de hOOk" as Felix Immler puts it (he's great). Now, I want to slap the scales on a Fieldmaster or Huntsman because I have too much trouble deciding between scissors or a saw, I want both! And the models with more tools are disco'd.
