Sal, where did you go to college? Did you go? I am just curious. I try to talk about great inventions or improvements on already existing items with my 6th graders. I liked the article on Eric in Blade. Thanks!

Didn't you know, Sal went to the Seminary. He is a "Hole-y man". :D In all seriousness, good question. I, too, wonder which academic institution produced such an innovative mind.

Best wishes,

Hi Eric,

6th graders. Great age.

I went to different colleges throughout California. First days, then nights. Psych major, but many varied interests.

Some of my "one liners" show my feelings;

"Continual refinement is our evolutionary obligation to humankind"
"Whatever the problem, education is the solution"
"We are all teachers and we are all students".

I think that "peeling back the onion" promotes greater understanding and more often than not, invention is the result of that greater understanding.

Hope this doesn't bore you.

My family was having a "discussion" on "why pay the higher price for one puffed rice brand over another or the generic?"

We purchased all of the brands we could find, put them in bowls (name on the bottom) 2% milk, no sugar or fruit. We tasted each many times. We all agreed that "B" was better tasing. Why? With scales, microscopes and measuring devices, we learned that "B" was; 1) more uniform is size and shape, which I would guess was the optimum for flavor. 2) more unform in the amount cooked, just right, not burnt or soft and 3) more unform in weight.

Probably absorbs milk more effectively, has the "right crunch", in addition to the right amount of salt, etc.

We learned a lesson in quality. My family teases me about "weighing the Rice Krispies".

My small inventions, and most that I have seen, were the result of solving a pre-determined problem. Effort, tenacity, pushing the envelope and peeling back the onion. Deeper understanding of the problem.

Sometimes the "Aha" is experienced, and that's great when it occurs, but not to be depended on. "Luck is a fickle mistress".

Where did "B" fall in the price line-up?

In my humble opinion, people who have tenacity also have a corresponding talent that drives them to push the envelope.
Paderewski had talent, and he also practiced four hours per day.

Isn't this one of the best threads I have read here!
Thank you, Sal, for sharing these thoughts.

For me, it started very early, around 6-7 y.o. I have "weighed the Rice Crispies" so many times in my life, that my family has grown tired of teasing me about it.

Interesting. I am notorious for evaluating the quality of cheap food categories. I have tried pretty much every form and brand of macaroni and cheese there is (box kits, frozen, store-made, restaurant, home recipes). When people ask me "how is it?," I don't leave out details.

The only thing I evaluate in as much detail as 50-cent noodles are $100 knives. Funny nobody has ever asked for an explanation of that. Maybe they are afraid I have a [long] answer.

Thanks for sharing Sal

The only things I've evauated are the different brands of tobacco. Just to come back at the one I have been smoking for years(the most expensive one:grumpy: )

And I think I've tried all the different diets there are. Most of the time my girlfriend asks:"Are you eating together with us, or your own grub?"

The diets didn't help me a lot though:grumpy: . I didn't lose a pound. I have one major weakness; I like my beers in the evening too much:D

I tried diet products too, without any noticeable results. I guess they forgot to mention wheather should I take them before or after the meals :foot:
Thanks Sal for another lesson

Was the rejected puffed rice wasted or can it be made into a knife handle of some sort?

:D :D :D
