I'm going to buy a Salt 1 for kitchen duty and to carry and use at the ocean. I usually perfer a PE, but for this knife, I'm thinking SE. Realizing Spyderco kitchen utility knives only come in SE, the Salt 1 SE should be a good choice. Right?

Thanks!

It will work. I use mine in the kitchen a lot but I would think the Atlantic or Pacific would suffice better because of the longer blades. Sometimes slicing a potato the blade on the Salt 1 is just barely long enough to make a clean cut all the way through without having to flip the potato over to then cut the other side. The bigger Salts would just go right through in one swipe.

Another good knife if you can find them still is the Catcherman. The thicker AUS8 ones are great kitchen knives. I was really hoping Spyderco would make some of those in H1 before they discontinued it. Maybe later down the road they can offer the sportsman and fisherman a limited run of them in H1 steel. Hint hint!

I considered the Pacific, but I think it might be too large to carry for my needs. I'm still on the fence regarding SE or PE for kitchen chores. Any thoughts? Also, how difficult is it to sharpen a SE on a Sharpmaker? I've read that it's easy and I've read the opposite.

I think serrated edges are fairly easy to maintain. I have a few that are very old that have seen lots and lots of use and the maitainance of them is very minimal. Its hard to not own a few serrated H1 blades because the serrated H1 is known for being superior to the plain edge versions in both hardness and edge keeping due to the precipitation hardening characteristics of the steel.

On the other side of the coin it is fairly easy to sharpen H1 steel when plain edged though. In fact its probably one of the easiest steels out there to sharpen to a nice biting edge.

Decision solved! Just ordered a Salt 1 SE and a Sharpmaker. Thanks STR.

Over lunch, I called Spyderco to get their advice and it was exactly the same as yours. With no hesitation, she said definately go with the SE on the H-1 Salts. She also said it would make a nice small kitchen knife.

I use a plain edged Pacific Salt in the kitchen.

It does need fairly regular maintenance with a Sharpmaker, but just a few swipes on the flats of the white stones brings it back to shave sharp.

UPDATE!

Just called the dealer back and had him add on a Pacific Salt SE. I'm concerned the Salt 1 might be small in the hand. Also, as STR said, the longer blade may perform better in the kitchen. Anyway, now I can compare them side by side in size and weight. Something I can't do at any store here in Indiana.

To kill some time as I'm waiting for the Pacific and the Salt 1 to arrive for comparison, which do you prefer? Is there anything I should consider? Thanks.

The knives arrived sooner than expected. I should have trusted my instincts. I'm going with the Salt 1. Pacific was just too big to carry. And I found the Salt's thinner blade to be a little better for slicing food. The SE smoked right through the apple and orange that I cut up. Spyderco delivers again!

I am going to be carrying my Pacific Salt to the beach this summer. Butm perhaps I should look into the smaller Salt 1 as well. The Pacific Salt IS a large knife.

KC,

My family and I seem to find our way to the ocean frequently and that is one reason I purchased a Salt. Wanted a knife that I could swim with and prepared lunch on the beach. This may sound silly, but one test I performed was putting on my swimming trunks and seeing which was more comfortable when clipped in the waist band (off-center front). Salt 1 won hands down. The Pacific's length poked into my groin when I lifted my leg or sat down. Not good!
