I want to get ahold of a couple of the best quality sambar stag slabs that I can for a knife that I am having made for me. Lately I have heard people call the stag they use: premium , presentation, and exihibition grade. Can someone please tell what grade I should be looking for if I want the best I can get, and does anyone know where I can possibly get ahold of some?

I know stag is getting harder and harder to find and that it is fairly expensive. Up to a point the price is not important, it is locating some really nice stag that would make my day. I think pieces about 4 1/2" X 1 1/2" X 1/4" would be perfect. This is for a small fixed blade. Thanks.

Keith, I think you would have to see the stag yourself or at least see pics of it.Grades of stag are very misleading, If there solid and the surface is not marked up they would be premium, but surface texture varies and by the time it is shaped for the handle it may look completly different.Hope this helps......

4 1/2X1 1/2" seems real big for a small folder. Also figure on paying $35.00 and up, for stuff knifemakers used to get from James Poplin at shows, for $5.00 a pair. A real shame, but that's life I guess.:(

It's a real problem getting to see the stag before purchasing it. I am going to have to depend on whoever it is that is shipping me the stag to pick something nice.

Mike, the stag is for a 9" overall, 4" blade, fixed blade knife. I realize that the price will be at least $35.00. That is not a problem.

Just a thought on getting a piece of stag you like.

Some mail order dealers will let you pick through a shipment and return what you don't want. Its worth asking and increases your odds of a piece(s) you really want.
