Sayoc Winkler Hawk

Thanks for all the replies. I got the trainer version for training in fillipino martial arts and piper system (south african knife combat) and was wondering how the sayoc hawk perform during throws.

To me, it looks a bit too rounded on the top to throw. I'm no expert though. It's beautiful however.
 
it's pretty massive.

i think whether it sticks or not is immaterial - gettin' hit with something that heavy is gonna take you down, brother.

i talked to the maker at SHOT and he was a real gentleman too.

Got my S/W Hawk today with the curly maple handle and front spike. Love the substantial feel of it and the forward weight distribution. It could give any bad guy a seriously lousy day.

These have been out a while now, what is the consensus on these? Are they made to be thrown, or just used in close combat?
 
The dvd on use of these is supposed to be out later this year. I think you will find that these are made for close quarter combat. I would suspect that throwing was the last thing that the designers had in mind for this one.
 
Throwing was not mentioned in the seminar at BLADE last year.
 
Throwing is for recreation, not for fighting. It would really require a lot of imagination to picture instances where throwing your weapon away is the better option.

It would be a gamble, even if you were throwing at an unsuspecting enemy. Throwing at an enemy who is fully aware of your presence limits the possibilities even more. Maybe you could fake some swings at him when he is not in range to mask your windup. You then release during one of your fake swings and exploit the resulting confusion/surprise/injury/opening to close with him and finish the fight with your off-hand weapon.

Other than that, I don't see much use in throwing a tomahawk in a fight.

PS: In lo-tech encounters between armies, throwing axes may be useful. The Franks used to first throw spears to damage/get rid of shields and followed up with their francescas to disrupt enemy lines. Then they charged with their remaining weapons. Still, such a scenario is highly unlikely nowadays.

I've tried to find historical examples of western tomahawks being thrown, haven't been able to find anything but a couple web articles that claim they were used for such but don't list sources.
