Hello all. Very sorry to see Codger has passed. I just picked up an old schrade 948 with original sheath and was going to pick his brain. Doesn't seem to be much talk about this 49ers knife out there on here or other places. Anybody else have info?

You are thinking of the model 498, not 948. They first were manufactured in 1973 in both stacked leather and staglon delrin. A few of the first ones off the assembly line had Schrade Walden tang stamps; 1973 was the transition year for tang stamps. These are very rare. The 498 was mfg for several years, then dropped, but brought back later for awhile. I have forgotten the years that these changes took place and can't seem to find them in my files today. The pattern was quite popular and was sold in large numbers, including some special contracts such as a Ducks Unlimited version. I see these all the time on Ebay.

Well now I know I should have used my glasses. It has the staglon and it needs a clean up. The blade is great with nice patina. The guard and pomel have a hammered look with the silver screw.

The whole set of Staglons. The two middle ones, the 497 and 498 were easily the two most prolific patterns.

Thanks for the reply. Was the hammered pattern on the butt cap and finger guard a common pattern?

Just on the 49ers knives as far as I know. It was supposed to connote benchmade quality.
