Hello. My name is S.Bryan Sayles and I am an addict.
My drug is reading.
I read about99% scifi/fantasy and 1% everything else.
I am running out of authors.
I read mostly series, because they are more "fleshedout''. Stand alone books seem much to short.
So,who do you read?
I am not looking for enlightenment, self help, preachery(my own word :D ),or toexpand my horizons. I read for entertainment.
Please include webpages, blogs, links,or any other info.
I'll startwith some of my favorite authors,in random order.
Feintuch
Jordan
Feist
Glen Cook
Moorcock
Stackpole
Drake
Gear
Elizabeth Haydon
Dave duncan
SimonGreen
Dickenson
Sara Douglas
Hobb
Tolkein
That should get it started. Now its your turn :D

Your list lacks most of the classics. Start over with the ABC's, Asimov, Bester and Clarke. Go deep with Verne and Welles, neglect not Heinlein, Herbert and Niven, wind up with Gibson and Stephenson. Your journey has just begun...

All great authors, add Alan Dean Foster, Piers Anthony and Asprin (the author not the pill) for a touch of humor.

Your list lacks most of the classics.

Karel Capek: War with the Newts.

Olaf Stapledon: Odd John, Sirius, Last and First Men, The Star Maker.

Yevgeny Zamyatin: We
George Orwell: 1984, Animal Farm
Ira Levin: This Perfect Day

Theodore Sturgeon for some humanistic stuff. Edgar Rice Burroughs for sheer space opera fun. There are so many more, I can't think of right now.

If you like a really huge story I can heartily recommend Peter f. Hamiltons "Nights Dawn" trilogy, the culture novels by Iain M. Banks are geat as well. My own personal favourites? Philip K. Dick, Robert Heinlien and H.P. Lovecraft. I'm also keen on the works of William Gibson, Bruce Sterling et al.
I'm about to tackle David Lindsey's "A Voyage To Arcturus", anyone read it? :D

capek is excellent!

i don't think i've seen le guin, gaiman, brust or vinge mentioned. so i'll mention them, too. :)

You might also want to try Neil Gaimann "American Gods" and "Neverwhere"
Dan Simmons "Hyperion"; Vernor Vinge "A Fire upon the Deep"; China Mieville "Perdido Street Station"

Matt

I may be dating myself, but you might want to try E.E. "Doc" Smith's "Lensman" series! I was also fond of Lester DelRey's work. And you don't get fnatasy any better than Andre Norton!

I'll give another vote for Heinlein and Gaiman. Neverwhere is one if the best fantasy novels written in the last twenty years.
I'll also second fudo's recommendation of H. Beam Piper. If you can find The Complete Fuzzy, read it. His novellas and short fiction are also pretty good.
Finally, I'd also recommend Steve Stirling. His Conqustador and The Peshawar Lancers entertained me as few books have in the last couple of years. Granted, they're not flawless, but the ideas behind the books are fascinating.
Happy reading.

James

Nobody's mentioned Iain M Banks yet. The Culture has to be one of the best creations in science fiction.

Roger

And another vote for Gaiman. American Gods is one of the best fantasy novels written in the last twenty years.

Another author to read is Stephen Donaldson.

i tend to read a lot of action adventure type books such as William W Johnstone's Ashes series and Jerry Ahern's Survivalist and Defender series. Check used book stores and the net to find some of those. Endworld series and Blade series are by David Robbins. These may not be what you are looking for but i figured i would throw them out there for you to look at. The Ashes, Survivalist, Endworld and Blade series are all post nuke scenario and the Defender series is more toward civil unrest in the US. enjoy whatever you decide to read

Lucky you, you're missing many of the classics from the Gold Age of SF:
Robert Heinlein
Jack Vance
P. J. Farmer
Frank Herbert
Larry Niven
Poul Anderson
Arthur C. Clark

Plus, some excellent moderns:
David Brin
Lois McMaster Bujold
S. M. Stirling
