What works for you? I seem to have it pretty bad. That sucks because I love kayaking, and all the good paddling here is in the ocean.

a few yrs ago when i first started going off shore fishing a lot i got seasick a lot, my doctor gave me something for nausea that really worked well, it was by 'script only, havent used for a while, dont get sick anymore (knock on wood)

talk to your doctor

or drink jack daniels all day, a buds cure all lol

I was always fine on a boat until it stopped & started rocking up & down; up & down. I never lasted to long! Try Dramamine;I take it whenever I might be going near water! Good luck!

Dramamine works but will make you sleepy. Ask your doc for Compazine or Phenagren.

They now have a ptch you put behind your ear that works well or a wrist bracelet.

I used to deep sea fish off LI, NY with an old Italian guy. His answer to sea-sickness was to drink lots of beer so you have something to puke up. It worked!!!

Also NEVER look down and watch the ocean, always look over at the horizon.....Ira

Look for Meclizine over the counter. It is the active ingredient in Dramamine II and is CHEAP as the dickens. Last time we found them in a Wal-Mart while we were traveling and we bought three bottles to have on hand. The Dramanine II are about $.50 ea whereas these were $3.00 for a bottle of 100. They work just as well as the DII.

There's a new less-drowsy dramamine that I have used before diving, while fishing, etc. Worked for me.

Last time I went deep sea fishing I was sick for 15 hours. Demonstrated the fine skill of projectile vomiting! :barf: :barf: :( :barf: :barf:

I had taken Dramamine, but it didn't help me. :(

It was very rough, we were getting airborn in the bunks due to the waves on the way out. I have been out on a 1/2 day boat after that...but don't think I'll do a 2 day trip again.

Bonine. Right next to Dramamine on the counter, but light-years ahead in performance. I use it whenever I fly, and it works like a charm. Its chewable and non-drowsy. Great stuff.

I've used transdermal scopolamine (sp). Clean off behind your ear with soap & water and stick it place works like a charm for most people. Didn't make me sleepy but thirsty as all get out. One side effect you aren't supposed to drink while using it.

low tech:

ginger root capsules.

worked when i was younger. used to get violently sick in almost any vehicle.

I second the ginger root recommendation. 1000 mg. about an hour before exposure, and 500 mg. every four hours thereafter. A navy flight surgeon recommended ginger root to my son, a pilot, for motion sickness during extreme acrobatics.

Just about all of the antiemetics can cause drowsiness - it's usually among the top three side effects listed.

Bonine is a tradename for meclizine.

You may have to try a few before something works well for you. Meclizine is one of the better ones I have used (got drowsy w/ Compazine & Dramamine). Reglan works well for me, but requires a Rx.

Good luck - always vomit downwind :)

Meclizine's old name was Antivert. Great drug. A must have for any sufferrer of Meniere's, like me.

dr. jones,

i definitely understand the convenience of bonine v. ginger.

just w/ the ginger it's one less chemical i have to put in my body. of course i'm an extremeist there: no alcohol, caffiene, industrial milk/meat. prefer wild fish/game

i'm wacky, i know...

If you want to go the drug free route, go to your local Pharmacy (they have these at Safeway) and ask for the wrist bands. These are 2 wristbands kind of like sweatbands with a little plastic button sewn in them. You put them on according to the instructions, and you won't get seasick.

I was dubious at first, but both my wife and her Dad get violently seasick very easily, and they can wear these wristbands and leave the dramamine at home. Supposedly these bands were tested on the British SAS squads, but that could be marketing hype.

Try em out, they're cheap!

I took 2 tabs of meclizine (50 mg) the night before going out Sunday. I took another one that morning.
Still got seasick.
I think I'll try the dramamine, ginger, and wristbands. If they don't work, I'll go for the scopolamine.

I'm with you Swede

My husband and I took the "Cat" from Bar Harbor Maine to Yarmouth NS. He NEVER gets motion sickness, and actually has suggested that I "make myself sick" - if you have ever been motion sick on a long trip you know there is no way someone would make themselves that way.

God must have been in a teaching mood that day, because he made Brad just as sick as I was! The only thing that saved us that day was a puchase made in the ships gift shop - a set of blue velcro wrist bands with a ball sewn into them that sits in the inside of your wrist. It's based on pressure points, and I've used those wristbands for everything from a long car ride to bumpy flights. They also work for kids.

Dramamine makes you drowsy - even the NON-drowsy formula, and try to bounce back after a groggy plane ride and be coherent at a show. That, and I get headaches afterwards that are hardly worth it.

We boat alot and everbody has a cure. My wife eats a pretty decent breakfast before a trip and it seems to work. We fished today in 3 foot chop and she was fine, had a large bowl of cereal with banana.

But the real deal are the new bands a friend has. They emit an electric current to your wrist. The amount can be adjusted. One of his lady friends gets sick on the dock. Now she can go for a ride and eat lunch at anchor with no sickness.

If anyone is interested I'll get the name for them.
