Sebenza owners...do you think the large Sebenza would be usefull as a blunt impact weapon? Basically, if you have enough time to pull it from your pocket but not enough time to open it, would it hold up? Thanks for your opinions...again.

Yes...I do, I think if you hit someone in the head with the butt end of a Lg. Sebenza it would knock them out cold. Never tried it and I hope I never have to, but if you had to...I think it would work.

Good idea greenstuffs. When you're in a life or death situation, just drive home and get one of your fixed blades, return to the scene, and hit the guy on the head with it. Guaranteed to work every time.

Cynic,

Great question.

That is one of the many reasons why my Large Seb get's more pocket time than any of my other folders.

It could easily be used as a Baton / Glass breaker etc, and what makes it best, is that it is extremely comfortable to hold in a closed position. I am a righty, and seems to fit my hand best when I hold it with the clip side down, and the blade spine touching the front of my hand.

Not sure if Mr. Reeve would ever admit it, but by the way the ends are made on the handles, I think a closed defensive/offensive application was in mind with the design.

As far as whether it would hold up if used that way, I have no doubt it would.

Just to add, I aggree with others on this, that I hope to God none of us ever have to find out how it / or any other object would work in a real Self Defence situation.

If you can use a roll of pennies as an equalizer, you can use the Sebby handle for sure.Solid, blunt object with momentum behind it,you bet! Titanium, shouldn't be effected at all.Whatever or whoever should be.Hopefully you will not have to find out.

Titanium is much harder than bone...it will cause damage. The blunt point on the butt and the head make it a good impact weapon. People often say the Sebenza is not made nor is it good for self defense, but I disagree. That ultra extreme hollow grind will slice and dice to no end...one swift slice with that and that wound will result in massive blood loss. Take your Sebbie and LIGHTLY tap it against your skull...it will make a very nice impact weapon.

Thanks for all of the responses. I hope I never have to use it like that ever (once I finally put my order in for a large classic). Again, thanks for the responses.

In my estimation, the only thing that makes the Sebenza not a "true" combat or self-defense tool is the lack of rapid deployment thumbstud or Spyderco hole. I can flick my Sebenza open instantly . . . as long as it is properly positioned in my hand. But if some punk jumps out from behind a wall with a Crescent wrench in his hand, it may take me a moment to withdraw my Sebenza from my pocket and open it up, particularly if I have gloves on. Here in Minnesota, we wear gloves outside for five or six months of the year. I won't be switching to a true combat folder any time soon, but I wish that the Sebenza's thumb stud was more amenable to use under less than perfect circumstances.

The Sebenza remains the very best folder I have ever had.

I think a large sebe could be a more effective weapon closed than open. A knife cut doesn't neccessarily stop someone in their tracks but a good blow to the side of the head with a closed sebe probably would.

I'll assume you are referring to defensive combat. Best defense: get away if that is an option. Second best defense: don't fight fair and use what you got, feet, hands, elbows, knees, keys, or whatever is available. If you happen to have the Sebenza in your hand or have time to draw it then by all means use it as a blunt weapon. Then get away if that is an option. If you are defending your family and home I hope you have more than a closed Sebenza at your disposal ;)

In my opinion (and from my training from many years ago) a knife is a great offensive weapon and a very poor defensive weapon compared to a gun. But you use what you got if you are attacked.
