"Secondary" EDC for those who don't want to carry their expensive knives

Strange thing : When I started carrying Spyderco knives I thought
nothing about the "what if?" scenario ( i.e. lost, impounded, etc. ).
As my Spydie collection grew ( along with custom collaborations ) I
began to think about a "secondary" EDC choice. Most of my other knives are for my collection, so tonight I bought a Gerber EZ Out.
( strange as this knife was produced under license from Spyderco )
But, at under $30, with a decent blade length ( compared to the "Dragonfly" I used to carry at $30+ ; then my "Cricket" at $50+ )
I find the EZ Out a bargain for EDC, and, if the "what if?" should
arise, I'll only be "out" $30. And my Spydie collection remains intact. Have any of you other forumites taken this approach to EDC?

A.E.T.

CRKT M-16 or Beretta Airlight either one will do in my book. A secondary EDC still has to be dependable. I know a lot of people who carry knock offs as a secondary EDC but if I can't trust my life with it I can't carry it no matter how much it looks like a LCC DA.

I think the EZ Out will serve me well. It's not a "knock off"
but Gerbers attempt to give credit where credit is due. Most
other knife companies that bastardize the Spyderco opening hole,
pocket clip, etc. won't do it under license ; they'll change the hole
shape, clip shape / position, etc. to get out of paying royalties.
Especially these Chinese communist companies who(m) blatantly copy
top Spydies and flog'em for $5-$10 a pop, and let us not forget those
who(m) feed into these "knock offs" that cut into the originators
profits. At least Gerber took a "gentlemanly stance" on this with the
EZ Out. I can't say the same for Jaguar, Master, etc. NAFTA was a BIG
mistake.

I come from the other school of thought: if I'm gonna put any money into it, I owe it to myself to use it.

While I think both ideas have their pros and cons, the above is what I subscribe to. Besides, it's a great feeling to look at that custom -- gouges and scratches n' all -- and know she's served you well ;)

I have FRN versions of a couple of Spyderco models that I use for EDC while I save the fancier and more expensive versions of the same models for special occasions or display.

For example
FRN Jess Horn EDC - Micarta Jess Horn for special occassions
FRN Native - G-10 BladeForums Native for special occasions.

This way my EDCs and the knives I carry only occasionally are basically the same (and all tip-up carry).

Just another approach to minimize the potential for loss. ;)

When I first got into high end knives, I was very concerned about losing or not using/abusing my expensive knives. Over time, I have come to a conclusion that a knife, no matter how expensive, is tool and should be used. The exceptions are art knives, which are clearly meant to be admired and not used, and vintage collectables that cannot be replaced. A working knife, whether $2 or $500 should be used and appreciated for its function as a cutting tool.

Last summer, tubing down the Delaware River...
Scratch one Benchmade AFO

End of summer, someone broke into my car
Scratch one Benchmade Reflex

4 months ago At the Local Gym, left knife on a locker room bench
Scratch another Benchmade AFO

I'll never learn... my EDC is a pair of Benchmade AutoStrykers.

funny thing is, I have the same Spyderco Endura since 1995. I carried that sucker for 5 years and never lost sight of it. I lose three Benchmade autos in 6 months

I have an ATS34 Gerber EZ Out Comboedge that I have clipped to the seatcover of my car for emergency use or if I forget my normal EDC (Kershaw Boa). It's a very economical knife and I've never worried about it failing me if needed. I'd never buy a knife that I thought would fail me.

Hey MM let me know when ya go tubin' again I live 1 mile from the Delaware River, and about 7 miles from the Portland boat launch. I drag the river when I go out in my boat with a BFM,(Big F**kin' Magnet) maybe I can drag where ya lost em' and see what comes up.
PS Ya had to lose my two favorites, and they ain't cheap, lost my Mini-Reflex once searched for a couple of years, never gave up, then I found it 2 years ago, I was so happy:D , I walked around with a permanat smile etched on my face. Took me a week to convince my wife I wasn't cheatin' on her. :)

I've considered the idea of carrying a cheap knife or one I don't care about, to save wear on the knives I do like, but I just can't do it. I'd feel bad using a POS when I've got perfectly good knives to use. It's been years since I've lost a knife so I don't really worry that I will. If I carried $1,500 knives I might worry about it more. I also always carry a Leatherman SuperTool 200 and that takes all the abuse (screwing, prying) so my knives don't get destroyed.

Holy cow, MM ! New York City must be crawling with thieves. Knives stolen from your car and gym - maybe you need to get something you can chain to your belt.

I have three relatively low cost (<$40) knives (one folder and two fixed blades) that I have now dedicated to times when I might loose a knife or have a knife confiscated. They get used when I'm flying (transported in checked luggage) or if I'm rafting/canoeing. They are all reasonable knives but not my favorites. I just ordered a backup neck knife to add to that group.

Beck,

I've resorted to dummy chording everthing to myself nowadays... some coil telephone cord and a few cable ties and I stop losing stuff...

Erdely,
I was tubing near Washington Crossing between Mercer and Bucks county, Jersey and Pennsylvania... I lost my AFO a few clicks north of the bridge (Washington Crossing Bridge)... It should still be in a Ziplock bag with my Car Keys... To tell you the truth, if you find it, you can keep the AFO, but I'd like to have the car keys back...LOL

MM, alot of us are careless in some way or another. My problem is accidental cuts. I search out knives with big guards to counter that problem, and it is a big limiting factor. I have to rule out alot of otherwise great knives because the guards are too small for a clumsy person like myself.
