I know several here have used them, so I checked out the web site. The site says the usable abrasive is about 5mm thick. I am assuming that they are a version of waterstones, which wear pretty quick IME. Do these stones wear out quickly? How is the cutting speed vs. achieved finish in the coarser grits? I'd like a really coarse stone to use before my 800 grit waterstone, without spending more than about $40, and the Shaptons look promising.

Just my opinion, but I think that I would trust any hone with the Shapton name on it!

The wear extremely slowly and stay very flat, though I still flatten them after every session. Usually it only takes a few seconds with a DMT coarse and they are dead flat. They also leave a real nice polish and finish for the advertised grit, as well as cutting very fast and clean. I am not sure how long they will last, but they seem to be wearing very slowly for me and the others that I have seen report on them.

Any natural or artificial stone, excluding diamond and CBN, can be flattened with coarse silicon carbide sandpaper on a flat surface.
