Segway Human Transporter

Um, the goal is to replace the automobile for city transportation. With that being the goal, I think it's quite worthy.

the goal is to replace the automobile for city transportation.

A noble goal, which helps to mask an incredibly idiotic solution.

Just let me know which hand you plan to hold your umbrella in, and check your dental plan to see if it covers the using your teeth as crash bumpers. :barf:

Not only broken teeth, but you'll need a good SAK designed toothpick for all the nasty bugs that hover about during the summer months. In my earlier years, I seem to recall this phenomena whilst dirt-biking sans facial protection. We have really juicy ones in these parts. Yuck. ....Sorry if this grossed anybody out.
I had to jump in because ever since it's hyped up airplay on the local TV news, the first thing that came to mind was: "What do you do during a cloudburst or other inclement weather? And secondly, what about facial protection from airborne objects, namely, insects, pebbles from truck tires, etc....What if you live in a multi story dwelling such as an apartment bldg. How do you get it up the stairs. Do you leave it parked outside. Most apt complexes in my neck of the woods do not provide for sheltered parking. This then leads to possible theft and exposure to the elements. Unless this thing can climb stairs, this by default, eliminates the a good percentage of the urban market which, according to the report in the above link, is their primary market.....

Just points to ponder....

A good bicycle offers the same solution. Keeps your heart and lungs in better shape as well. Never needs recharging.

The specs I've seen on the Segway don't sound like something that could replace a car. The maximum speed is just over 10 mph and the range is only a few miles. There's no way you could get around most cities with that.

The Segway looks like it could have some nifty industrial and other specialty applications, but I can't imagine why the general public would want them.

Does anyone else remember the moped craze? ;)

Apparently there are 2 different models, the regular for us normal folk & a "heavy duty" model- being looked at by the Postal Service, warehouses, etc.

Reasons to buy a bicycle instead of that contraption....

> It is cheaper. For the price, you could buy ten very good bicycles and a Gore-Tex rain suit for inclement weather.

> It is easily maintained by the owner. Just a small allen wrench set is all that is needed to maintain a good bike.

> It is lighter and more portable. It's already been mentioned that if you live on the second story of an apartment complex you can tote your bike right up the stairs and park it. A businessman can get himself a folding bike, take the bus downtown, ride to the office, fold the bike down, take it on the elevator to the office and set it next to his desk.

> The bicycle will improve your fitness level. Americans are becoming fatter and sicklier by the generation, and most of it has to do with lack of exercise and proper diet. If you rode a bike only on the days that weather permitted, your fitness level would improve dramatically.

> No recharging a bike. The range is limited only to your endurance, which gets better the more you ride. I've put 100 miles on my bike in one day..... no recharging necessary (well, except for my thighs and butt).

> And while we're on the subject of recharging, you ever stop to think of where the electricity comes from? If everyone in America all of a sudden decided to drive an electric car, there would be a huge energy crisis. How do you get out of an energy crisis of such magnitude? You crank up the coal plants, the nuke reactors, and dam up a couple of rivers. Not as environmentally friendly as you thought, eh?

Do yourself a favor. Get a good bike.

According to an article that I read, this first version can go 30 mph when in the outdoor mode. They also have the ability to climb stairs (user does not ride, but walks beside for this manuver). I was in Miami Beach 3 weeks ago and saw 2 of them being ridden along the sidewalk. A really amazing applicating of advanced technology - like something out of a Dr. Seuss book.

However, to be honest, I see little advantage over a traditional scooter or moped as practical transportation for most people, especially considering the cost. The side-by-side wheel arrangement creates the possibility for stair climbing, but trades off the inherent stability, cornering ability and braking potential that comes with a traditional bicycle configuration. The advanced electronics and gyroscopes compensate for much of that, but then you are relying on electronics rather than physics.

I'm sure this thing will find specialty applications in industry, for the disabled and as a toy for the wealthy, but I don't see it as popular transportation. The killer application of this technology is really in the predecessor to the Segway - that articulated wheelchair thing. It will be interesting to watch where this one goes.

Isn't this thing just the first model, the true "it" is supposed to be some kind of hovermobile? Now THAT would be one hell of a gadget.

Check out what my school just released:

I can almost smell the lawsuits from over here. You haven't seen a larger then usual number of scum (lawyers) hanging out on campus. They can be easily identified, since they will be accompanied by someone toting a video camera, as they try to put on film the precise instant at which the rider's head makes a crunching contact with a tree.

Note to campus security: no more golf carts for you.

They had one of these exact models featured on Fraiser not long ago. They were all fighting over who got to use it. The thing looks cool and I wouldn't turn one down as a gift, but I think this is just another step towards total laziness. Hell back in my day, we walked 30 yards in the snow to the bus stop every morning :D

Postal worker:

park postal truck
put on weight lifting belt
lift Segway from truck
remove weightlifting belt
ride Segway down block delivering mail
put on weight lifting belt
lift Segway back into truck
remove weightlifting belt
drive postal truck containing Segway to next block
repeat as needed to complete route

luckly not your tax dollars
