Serrated blades, Help!

Can anyone help me with info on how to put serrations on a blade. Would you file them by hand or is there a special grinding wheel available to do the job. would you serrate the blade before or after heat treating? any suggestions are well appreatiated.

Welcome to the forums Henry!
Only way I've ever done serrations was with a regular size round file and a small round file. Make a cut with the large file then 2 or 3 cuts with the small one. Just keep repeating this. You need to do it before heat treat or it'll be too hard for the file to cut.

I've seen serrated grinding wheels. They had some for auction at bladeauction.com, but it was a long time ago. I don't have any idea if you can still find them.

If you go HERE theres a few pictures of a knife I added serrations to after heat treat. I did it with a cheap diamond file. Actually its considered a diamond hone, its round with one flat edge and a fish hook groove. It wasn't to difficult other than getting the spacing right on where you start each cut. That just takes some time. I would recommend getting some GOOD diamond files if you plan on doing to many serrations after heat treat. I started with a brand new coarse file and it doesn't cut to good anymore. The diamonds all wore off. A higher quality file would have a stronger bonding agent. It would go faster with a longer file too. The bottomline is it takes time and lots of elbow grease.
The positive side is that you can shape the serrations to be as coarse or fine as you want, and you know you have the right size tool for sharpening them.
