All of you probably heard this one a million
times, but, as I'm new to this forum I was
just wondering who out there favored serrations
or plain edge ? I'm sold on serrations ; like'em
better for their cutting ability. Although they
do have their drawbacks. anybody ?

A.E.T.

I only have one serrated knife - a Spyderco Rescue Jr. that I keep in my car.

For everyday use I prefer a plain-edge. Cleaner cuts and easier to sharpen regularly.

I agree. A plain edge is easier to get sharper, and cuts much better than a serrated edge.

Serrations do have their place though. A main advantage with serrations is that it is possible to "cut" something even when the knife is dull. But for everday use the plain edge is best.

I feel the same way, all of the knives I've bought in the last year are plain edge, and I have specifically asked for them. One exception might be for a knife kept in a camper or a boat where it might have to take abuse or be required to cut wet rope. I have gotten great service from the knives I have with a combo edge.

I prefer to really abuse a blade and wait for the dings, chips, and pits to begin to act as "natural" serrations.

If you do a lot of rope work, serrations have the edge. Overall, plain edge is more versatile.

Overall, I also like my plain edged blades better than serrated. Easier to sharpen. However, if your knife will be used for cutting twine, rope etc, I think the serrated is better.

I really like plain edges myself. They’re much easier to sharpen and do more of the cutting that I normally do. I don’t cut a heck of a lot of rope or seatbelts. Of all my knives, I don’t think I have a single fully serrated knife. Most of my cutting requires a clean cut instead a faster ragged cut.

I do have a few partially serrated knives though. The only ones I actually use are the ones with longer blades. I find small partially serrated blades to be almost completely useless, as there is no way to be precise enough to choose which part of the blade I’m using.

Do I wish that I had a fully serrated knife? Yep. I have a plain edge Spyderco Military. I should have gotten the serrated version. Why? Because the knife looks positively awesome with serrations!!!!

-For an edc go plain edge.
-For an outdoor beater that will cut lots of branches, rope, and other fiberous material, go with fully serrated.
I would not reccommend a partially serrated blade because there is not usually enough of either edge to work well.
If you go serrated, go Spyderco. The Endura is a workhorse and I think it works even better with serrations.

I only own one knife that has serrations, and they are partial serrations at that. I prefere plainedges for their ease of maintenance, cutting, and does all of my cutting purposes flawlessly.

Definatley smooth edge, they look nicer to the eye, are less threatening to the public and are a snap to sharpen. I find myself trading more and more of my serrated knives to make room for smoothedge versions. Also, I am a member of the Spyderco Collectors Club and have always been aggravated that most collectors club versions are SpyderEdge as opposed to smooth edge.
Phrede:(

Plain edge. Although I did just trade for my first fully serrated blade. We'll see, but for now plain.

Plain edge, because I usually need a clean slice rather than a ragged one. I also prefer the looks of plain edges, but if you're after pure utility, looks aren't important.

Having said that, my Leatherman Wave goes everywhere with me, and I've used the serrated blade on that a couple times.

Get the best of both worlds - carry one of each :)

I'd have to agree with what most other form members are stating. I perfer plain it is easier to re-sharpen unless you cut alot of rope or other fiber material I'd stay with a plain edge. Serrations look neat so if you can find a combo edge that may be the way to go.
