Sharpening a WOO neck knife with a Sharpmaker???

I'm having a few issues getting this knife sharp enough with the Sharpmaker. Do you think I would be better off doing this free hand with a DMT stone or can this be done with the Sharpmaker?

I use a Lansky set with diamond stones to do all my Livesay knives. I can get a hair popping sharp edge. I always reprofile the edge on my Livesay knives when I get them. Newt and I have different philosophies about the most useful edge and Newt knows a hell of a lot more about knives than I do, but I know what I like.
 
Try the sharpie technique to make sure that when you use your sharpmaker, the stones are hitting the actual edge. If notm then thin out the bevel on your DMT to less than your Sharpmaker angle. Then sharpen on the sharpmaker and you'll get a great edge in no time!

I'm sure you know this, but just in case: I believe the WOO is a chisel ground blade, so you would stroke on the beveled side and then you stroke the flat side dead flat on a stone. You can just put the sharpmaker stone in the flat position and use that.

How many strokes should I do on the dead side? With the chisel ground I would do like three strokes then one on the flat side on my other chiesl ground knives.
 
If you want to preserve the chisel grind, do all your sharpening on the side that's ground and then hit the flat side just enough to remove the burr.
 
Exactly what Cougar said. It really won't take too much to get the burr off, just do a few strokes on the flat side and check for the burr.

Usually when sharpening chisels or chisel ground kitchen knives, folks will grind the edge, do 5 or so stroke son the flat side, and then a few alternating ones just to make sure the burr is gone. You don't have to do too much on the flat side though, as all you are doing is burr removal.
 
go to www.emersonknives.com and sharpen the woo like ya would an EKI, thats what i did, and its plenty sharp, dont think a sharpmaker is the best tool for this sharpening job imho
