I dunno if it should be here but what the hell. I'm going overnight fishing this weekend. I have never went up north this late in a season so its kind of an learning experience for me.

My dad gave me this old axe - dull as insert favorite expletive here. How can a put a semblance of an edge on it?

Thanks a bunch gang.

I use a file, but smarter people will give you a better answer. A file will sure do the trick, though.

I use my knife grinder, but a file if that's all u got,, I platinum coated my dads Norwegian Special Forces Battle axe,, its sweet,,, good luck Pauli,,

The old Boy Scouts manual had an excellent section on how to sharpen an ax; I don't know if the current one does, tho'. All you need is a file and some patience; a finger guard (a tin can lid punched through with the file tang) is a good idea.

I use a file always, I don't take it down, or thin it out, just a nice 30ish ( im guessing, maybe 35) degree angle...very tough..not too thin. I sit on a log or bench with the handle under one thigh and the head of the axe resting on top of the other. I leave it there. I had a real fancy two headed axe some time back, probably sharpened to around 25 degrees, sharp as a four letter word...worthless...it just sank into anything you wanted to split. I ended up using it for limbing.

I always used a file - if you have one with a handle - all the better

I guess the diamond stones would work good too -

Having a vice available to hold the axe is nice too
