Sharpening D2

I just got a sharpmaker 204, and I've never really sharpened before. After badly dulling a cheetah on concrete I got it back to shaving sharp pretty easy. I sharpened a couple other cheapies, and put a nice edge on my victorinox multi tool.

Feeling confident enough I went for my 42-400. After doing more than the other knives took to get sharp from dull. The D2 blade went from a bit sharp to I think a little sharper, maybe? I then got scared of messing it up and stopped. Is D2 much harder to sharpen? Does it just take a lot more strokes? I've also heard of tip rounding on the 204, what causes that, I wouldn't get near the last quarter inch of the blade.

i use a norton medium till its sharp then goto the fine then finally i use a razor strop that has jewlers rough on it my sharpening angel is 23 degrees, ihave found that to work the best.

D2 is very hard stuff. BM's D2 is 60-62Rc, which is about as hard as you'll ever see a production knife steel.

It takes longer, but it can be done. Just keep at it.

To avoid rounding the tip on my 204, I use the flats for the tip and pay close attention. Rounding occurs when you stroke down the rod and run out of blade, and the tip skids off the edge. You know you're rounding when you do this when the pressure you put forces the blade past the rods when you go to far. Just use the flats for the tip, it's safer.

I hadn't heard or thought about the rounding issue before.

Thanks for the tip!

I guess I'll just have to keep at it slow and steady. Thanks

I'm also wondering is a norton a similar sharpening system to an edge pro apex? Wouldn't 23 degrees be a bit steep of an angle to hold an edge, especially if it is stroped?

This is another thread that I suspect will get more responses in the General Forum. We've got some real sharpening experts here at Bladeforums.com who are always glad to offer advice. But some of them don't frequent the balisong forum so they may not see this and you may miss some good input.
